The Opioid Crisis Response Program with Coconino County Health and Human Services provides essential Peer Support Services, including linkages to care for people who use drugs through a harm reductionist framework. This apprentice position will be a part of the core team, learning to provide this support to community members in need. Peer Support Specialists have their own story of behavioral health recovery and utilize their lived experience to help the people they serve and promote recovery-oriented environments. This apprentice position will learn under the guidance of the OCR Team, including current Peer Support Specialists and the Program Manager.
Under general supervision performs work of routine difficulty in providing services to individuals experiencing mental illness and/or substance use disorders; performs related work as assigned.
After incremental training in the apprentice position, the employee will be able to demonstrate the ability to assist and work independently, autonomously, and consistently perform job duties.
NOTE: This is a grant funded position through the ADHS Workforce Development Grant and has an end date of May 1, 2024.

  • Demonstrates empathy and understanding of vulnerable populations while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Observes all rules of confidentiality relating to client interactions, both internally and when working with external partners
  • Become proficient in harm reduction
  • Become proficient in community resources
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, will become proficient in assisting clients by navigating and accessing services based on individual needs and expressed goals of clients
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, will become proficient in facilitating linkages to care to support clients in accessing services
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, works individually with clients and assists them in achieving the goals established by client and program staff.
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, assists clients in building life and social skills that give them the tools and confidence to achieve goals related to housing, employment, education, relationships, etc.
  • Become proficient in problem-solving techniques with individuals and groups.
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, become proficient in advocating for clients by promoting best practices
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, participates in meetings with internal and external team members to coordinate care, assess client progress and needs, and develop follow-up plans
  • Become proficient in utilizing recovery-oriented, trauma informed, and first-person language in all interactions while demonstrating excellence in compassionate customer care
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, will become proficient in maintaining updated client records with plans, notes, appropriate forms, or related information
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, will become proficient in building relationships with collaborative partners in order to support and strengthen referrals and linkages to care.
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, will become proficient in conducting home visits and regular check-ins with clients to provide outreach and engagement.
  • Under supervision of R&R program staff, conducts outreach to promote program services.
  • Participates in weekly supervision and demonstrates efforts to be prepared and engage in reflection exercises.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as needed
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: driving, sitting for trainings, phone calls, and meetings; working with and around others over the phone and for individual and group meetings; hearing and speech for ordinary conversation.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or G.E.D., a desire to work within specific program and one year of previous work experience in any industry OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.
The ideal candidate will be committed to serving diverse communities, be passionate about serving people who use drugs, and will be ready to learn and grow in this position, with skills and experience in engaging with individuals respectfully. This candidate should be eligible for and interested in getting a Peer Support Specialist certification.
This position is non-exempt from overtime.
