Job Overview:
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced part-time Phone Triage Nurse to join our pediatric healthcare team at the newly opened office of WUCA Monarch Pediatrics. In this role, you will be responsible for providing expert telephone-based and/or secure patient portal-based nursing care and guidance to parents and caregivers seeking assistance with pediatric health concerns. The ideal candidate should possess strong communication skills, clinical expertise in pediatrics, and the ability to assess and prioritize medical situations over the phone. The position will initially be in-office, but there is opportunity for hybrid work in the future.
Responsibilities:
1. Telephonic and/or Secure Patient Portal Assessment:
· Conduct thorough assessments of pediatric patients over the phone or via EPIC MyChart patient portal to determine the severity of symptoms and the appropriate course of action. Schedule appointments as appropriate.
· Gather pertinent information from parents or caregivers regarding the child's medical history, current symptoms, and any relevant factors.
2. Clinical Decision Making:
· Utilize pediatric nursing knowledge to make informed clinical decisions and provide recommendations for appropriate care, including home care instructions or referral to a healthcare facility.
3. Triage and Prioritization:
· Prioritize incoming calls and/or EPIC MyChart secure messages based on the urgency of the situation, ensuring timely responses to critical cases.
· Determine the need for immediate medical attention and assist in coordinating emergency services when necessary.
4. Patient and Parent Education:
· Offer clear and concise explanations of medical information, treatment plans, and follow-up care to parents or caregivers.
· Provide health education to enhance the understanding of pediatric health issues and preventive measures.
5. Documentation:
· Maintain accurate and detailed records of phone triage and/or EPIC MyChart patient portal interactions, including assessments, recommendations, and any follow-up actions taken.
6. Collaboration:
· Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including physicians and other on-site staff, to ensure seamless continuity of care.
· Communicate effectively with team members to share information on emerging pediatric health trends or concerns.
· Assist with prior authorizations, FMLA paperwork, sending and receiving faxes, drafting and sending letters on behalf of patients.
7. Compliance:
· Adhere to established protocols, guidelines, and regulatory standards to ensure the delivery of high-quality and safe patient care.
Qualifications:
1. Education:
· High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.
· Graduate of accredited RN school.
· Registered Nurse (RN) with a current Missouri license.
2. Certification:
· Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or completion within 6 months of hire.
3. Requirements:
· Maintain required HIPAA compliance and skills/competencies. Participate in in-services, staff programs, continuing education, and cross-training programs according to established standards and Washington University policies.
· Comply with OSHA, state, and federal regulatory sources/standards.
· Participate in quality improvement activities to ensure appropriate clinical outcomes.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
· Employment is conditioned upon successful completion of a reference check, criminal background check, and/or drug screen.
4. Experience:
· Two years’ experience in a healthcare/medical office setting. Experience in pediatric nursing, with a focus on telephone triage preferred.
· Experience with EPIC electronic health record preferred.
· Familiarity with common pediatric illnesses, injuries, and developmental stages.
5. Skills:
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making abilities with ability to work independently.
· Proficiency in typing and in the use of electronic health records (EPIC preferred).
· Willingness to assist with basic office procedures (urine catheterization, vaccine administration, PPD readings).
· Demonstrated ability to provide empathetic and family-centered care.
6. Availability:
· Daytime hours Monday-Friday with rotating Saturday morning shifts. Approximately 20-24hr/wk on average, Saturday rotation is approximately 1 in 4 Saturdays.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $27.00 - $33.00 per hour
