Position Information
Perform journey-level carpentry work in the design, construction, alteration, repair, and maintenance projects of Park District buildings, facilities, furniture and equipment.
In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:
  • Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
  • Interact professionally with other employees, customers and suppliers.
  • Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
  • Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, implement appropriate safety practices at all times and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards.

Essential Duties
Perform a variety of journey-level carpentry work in the design, construction, alteration, repair and maintenance projects of Park District facilities; prioritize and schedule construction projects to accomplish a wide variety of duties related to the carpentry trade.
Construct, remodel and repair District equipment and facilities including various wood structures, cabinets, counter tops, desk tops and docks.
Draw sketches and prepare specifications; estimate time, cost of labor and materials for work projects; obtain competitive prices for equipment and supplies according to established procedures; prepare and maintain related records and reports; drive a vehicle to pick up supplies and equipment.
Alter, repair and replace stairs, doors, roofs, walls, floors, ceilings and other building parts; construct or assemble furniture and other wood and metal structures; hang and repair drywall and doors.
Operate a variety of equipment and machines including saws, lathes, jointer, planer, fork lift, boom truck, jackhammer, concrete working tools, actuated and air nailers, and various hand and power tools.
Maintain tools and equipment in a safe, clean and proper working condition.
Build concrete forms, walls, slabs and perform patch work; mix and pour concrete; lay hardwood flooring, tile, wall tile and carpeting as assigned.
Build, repair and install wooden and chain-linked fences, and garage doors; make partitions and dividers.
Repair various types of locks.
Perform glazing work; repair, replace and install glass windows, frames and screens.
Build, repair and install boat docks, floats, gangways, decks and bridges.
Assure compliance with appropriate safety practices and procedures and with applicable federal, State and local codes, regulations and requirements.
Communicate with Park District departments and personnel concerning maintenance and repair needs.
OCCASIONAL DUTIES:
Design and construct a variety of special projects for Park District events and activities as assigned.
Provide work direction to District part-time helpers as assigned.
Attend safety and training meetings as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Completion of a four-year journey-level apprenticeship technical training program in carpentry and two years of journey-level carpentry experience including some experience in framing and concrete forming and finishing.
LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able work a schedule that may include weekend shifts.
• Valid Washington driver's license with acceptable driving record.
• Power actuated tool license.
• Forklift operators certificate.
• Obtain a valid First Aid and CPR Card within the probationary period.

• Design of wooden structures for a variety of applications and uses.

• Basic lock repair.
ABILITY TO:
• Work in close contact with potentially dangerous animals.
• Operate and maintain a variety of related tools, equipment and machinery.
• Provide work direction to others as assigned.
• Observe animals for physical and behavioral health.
• Perform various animal husbandry duties for assigned species including cleaning, feeding, collection, maintenance and management of animals.
• Perform work to assure the safety of animals, employees and the visiting public.
• Perform journey-level rough and finish carpentry work to repair, construct or remodel of Park District buildings, facilities and equipment.
• Prepare sketches and designs of proposed projects.

Life Insurance:
Provided at no cost to the employee through Unum, amount is equal to annual salary up to $275,000. Benefits will reduce at age 70.
Retirement Plan: All employees are covered under the Public Employees' Retirement System through the Washington State Department of Retirement Services (DRS).
Medical Coverage and Dental Coverage: Metro Parks Tacoma pays 90% of the total cost of medical/dental coverage for employees and their dependents. Coverage begins the first of the month following the date of employment. Medical coverage is offered through Kaiser. Dental options include Delta Dental Service and Willamette Dental.
Health Care and Day Care Reimbursement Accounts: A benefit plan that allows you to pay for health care or dependent care expenses with "before tax" dollars.
Deferred Compensation (457 plan): Optional employee paid retirement savings plans are available through Empower, ICMA,WA State Deferred Comp Program and Mass Mutual.
Paid Holidays for career employees: New Years Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, Two Floating Holidays are granted after successful completion of the probationary period
Vacation: 8 hours earned monthly.
