This position performs journey level work in the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, and servicing of municipal parks, grounds, facilities, right-of-ways, and infrastructure. This is the journey level position in the Maintenance Technician job series requiring some technical knowledge. Positions in this class perform a variety of maintenance activities and other duties related to repair, construction, or preventive maintenance. Work is performed within established procedures with individual judgment limited to proper handling of, and minor changes to, accepted routine. Although the position may operate independently, supervision or guidance is readily available, and the incumbents' work is frequently reviewed.

This class differs from the Maintenance Technician I job class in that the latter class performs entry level maintenance work requiring less technical knowledge. The Parks Maintenance Technician II classification performs driving duties requiring a class "A" Washington State Commercial Drivers' License.

Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  1. Constructs, installs, maintains, and renovates parks and recreational facilities, including parks, buildings and systems, including outdoor plumbing, irrigation and drainage, and wiring.
  2. Inspects, repairs, and renovates golf course grounds, excluding turf management and irrigation.
  3. Performs grounds and landscape maintenance including painting, electrical repairs, mowing, cultural practices, fertilizer and chemical applications.
  4. Establishes preventive maintenance schedules and ensures compliance; performs routine maintenance of operator equipment and machinery and departmental vehicles.
  5. Inspects parks and job sites, and determines scope of work needed, makes supplies and materials lists, estimates time required, and establishes project schedule; estimates costs for facility repairs, modifications, or additions recommended to Division manager.
  6. Monitors security requirements for park or golf facilities, grounds and work sites to ensure security and safety of people, equipment, and materials.
  7. Assists the supervisor in overseeing contracted repairs, maintenance, and services and coordinating this work with facility users.
  8. Prepares facilities for routine use and special events.
  9. Installs, inspects, maintains, repairs, and services municipal utilities, facilities, or equipment as assigned.
  10. Effectively maintains and updates files, maps, and other records, related to installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of municipal facilities or utilities; submits work orders.
  11. Operates assigned equipment, makes minor field repairs and adjustments; reports need for major repair to supervisor.
  12. Responds to customer inquiries and requests.
  13. May oversee the work of workers assigned to crew.
  14. May be assigned to other divisions performing work requiring similar skills during times of peak work loads, manpower shortage, public emergency, or other times when critical work needs to be completed.

A combination of the experience, education, and training listed below which provides an equivalent background to perform the work of this position.

Experience:

  • Three years experience performing a variety of the essential duties of the position or a related position performing the essential duties defined above.

Education and Training:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Must possess, or have the ability to possess within one month of hire date, a Washington State Driver's License.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date:
  1. class "A" Washington State Commercial Driver's License without air brakes restriction and with tanker endorsement
  2. first aid and CPR certifications
  3. flagger certification
  4. Public Operator Pesticide Applicator's license
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification preferred.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; kneel, bend, or climb and to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis; lift up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis; and lift and/or move between 50 - 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

This position regularly works outside in various weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee may be exposed to physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment and also will sometimes work in hazardous areas under hazardous conditions. The employee occasionally works in traffic, near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock and radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

This position works a regular schedule, however, incumbents may be called in to work at irregular times in emergency situations.
