The City of Lynden's Parks Department is hiring a Parks Maintenance Worker.
Applicants must be able to work a non-standard work schedule as needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of municipal building grounds, parks and recreational facilities. Provides daily direction to community service workers and temporary/seasonal employees as assigned.
Maintenance of Grounds and Facilities
- Maintains parks grounds by trimming, mowing, planting, clearing, and removing litter and debris. Performs snow removal when necessary.
- Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of parks and open spaces.
- Maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
- Maintains and prepares athletic fields.
- Inspects, washes, and performs routine maintenance of park drinking fountains and restrooms.
- Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces park tables and slabs.
- Cleans and maintains tennis courts and nets. Installs and maintains goal posts and nets for sports facilities, including soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis and basketball.
- Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
- Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs, prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.
Building Maintenance
- Performs minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Performs routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment.
- Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.
- Operates tractors, mowers, jack hammers, welders, trucks, steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other listed equipment as needed.
Custodial Work
- Performs general cleaning and janitorial duties as required and assigned.
- Performs minor repairs and maintenance such as replacing light fixtures and bulbs.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies.
- Washes windows, cleans rain gutters and sweeps roofs.
- Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.
Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; AND
- Two (2) years of experience in custodial and/or maintenance work, preferably including building and grounds maintenance; OR
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the incumbent with the necessary qualifications may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance.
- Equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.
- First aid and applicable safety precautions.
Skills & Ability to:
- Ability to work independently under general direction and to complete daily activities according to established procedures and assigned work schedule.
- Ability to provide basic instructions to others.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions and to lift and carry heavy objects.
- Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
- Represent the City in a positive and professional manner.
- Support and promote the City's mission, vision, and core values in all aspects of job performance.
- Must have a valid driver's license and appropriate insurance at the time of hire for work-related travel.
- Must pass appropriate background checks.
- Possess (or obtain within six months of hire date) CPR and First Aid certifications and maintain them throughout tenure.
