An opportunity is anticipated for a self-motivated, hard-working team player, with strong resource management, visitor services, protection, and maintenance experience to fill a Park Service Specialist position at St. Sebastian River Preserve in Fellsmere/Sebastian, in both Brevard and Indian River counties. The park is 22,678 acres and provides access through over 50 miles of multi-use trails, primitive camping and a wonderful visitors center.

The St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park is situated in Southern Brevard County and Northern Indian River County. The park totals 22,000 acres and harbors 22 diverse natural community types as well as over 70 protected species. The park provides quality resource-based recreation, with over 60 miles of multi-use trail for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and nature study, as well as access to more than ten miles of the St. Sebastian River for paddling, boating, and fishing.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Assists in the planning, coordination, and implementation of resource management and restoration projects within the preserve to protect, enhance, or restore the resources and participate in the control of exotic animal and plant species. Participates in the execution of all facets of prescribed fire. Assists with other operational activities such as the construction, maintenance, and repair of trails, fire breaks, fences, gates, informational signs, and park roads. Operates vehicles, field equipment and maintenance tools as required accomplishing assigned tasks. Ensures that all vehicles, field equipment, and park tools are properly maintained, operable and safe.
Recruits and coordinates volunteers to assist with the management of the preserve. Assists Park Manager with the Park’s Citizens Support Organization.
Prepares forms and reports on a wide range of subjects including resource management reports, visitor contacts, wildlife sightings, crisis and miscellaneous incidents, vehicle and equipment operations, property records, and p-cards purchases. Answers telephone, operates personal computers and park radio equipment.
Conducts educational and outreach activities to better acquaint the general public and resource users with the natural resources and resource protection needs of the preserves. Activities include conducting interpretive programs and field trips.
Coordinates preserve’s compliance with the American Disability Act requirements.
Ensures park rules are enforced for the protection of the park resources and the safety and enjoyment of the visitor.
Performs other park related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: resource preservation, restoration and resource management techniques.
Knowledge of and ability to: accurately and completely fill out forms and/or reports.
Skill and ability to: to perform basic carpentry skills, including but not limited to boardwalk or fence repairs; communicate with the public; coordinate, supervise and manage park volunteer/CSO program; perform basic mechanical skills, including but not limited to, oil changes or troubleshooting and minor repairs; perform basic equipment maintenance skills, including but not limited to, sharpen chainsaws or lawn mower blades or replacing lawn mower blades.
Ability to: work outside in extreme conditions, including but not limited to, heat, cold, wind, rain, etc. as well as continuously work outdoors in conditions of extremely high humidity, heat, sunlight and exposure to insects, snakes, etc.; participate in Resource Management activities, including but not limited to, fire management or non-native plant and/or animal removal; plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; plan and prepare educational and interpretive materials and programs; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations and policies; work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays; maintain effective working relationships with others; maintain a valid driver’s license; successfully complete a background and fingerprint check; successfully meet position-specific DRP Burn Standards for Prescribed Fire.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Driver’s License
- Successfully complete fingerprinting check
- Successful completion of annual moderate pack test
Passing of moderate pack test must be completed prior to employment, and annually thereafter. Prior to being hired, applicant will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced. Pack test requires applicant to complete a two mile walk while carrying 25 pounds in under 30 minutes.
