Description / Position Overview
Park Ranger I - Urban Trails Ranger Team
As a Park Ranger, you will ensure the City's natural and historical resources are maintained, preserved, and protected according to pertinent laws, ordinances, and regulations; provide enforcement pertaining to the City of Colorado Springs Parks Code Chapter 9; Article 9.
The Park Ranger is responsible for upholding safety and environmental regulations set by numerous park plans and monitoring the activities of assigned parks and recreation facilities. This position requires effective communication skills related to conflict resolution and de-escalating situations in a professional manner. Situations can engage a variety of people with diverse backgrounds which will include mental health and homeless community members. Subsequently, having former law enforcement, Park Ranger, or military experience is beneficial.
Essential Job Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Patrol Urban Trails and parks throughout the day
    • Address public safety and health issues
    • Monitor trails and parks for hazards.
  • Communicate with staff and public to address any concerns.
  • Respond to emergencies on park and trail property.
    • Coordinate with public safety personnel
    • Provide direction for access and closures needed regarding emergencies.
  • Act as liaison between the public and inter-governmental agencies; maintain close communications with Colorado Springs Police Department, Colorado Springs Fire
    Department, Colorado Springs Utilities, Division of Parks and Wildlife, and the Humane Society
  • Issue citations for violations
  • Complete reports and appear in court when required.
  • Assist in the creation of daily and weekly work plans.
  • Assess needs related to park health and resource protection.
  • Maintains statistics regarding park issues.
  • Monitor properties for resource damage.
  • Respond to sick or injured animals and facilitate the removal of dead animals.
  • Monitor and replace park signage.
  • Prepare facilities for special events
    • Support the event coordinators
    • Ensure facilities are safe, clean, and prepared for events
    • Verify proper permits are obtained
    • Evaluate and provide feedback after the event.

  • We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
    Knowledge of:
    • Natural area/open space/public lands conservation and management.
    • Natural resource management practices and techniques.
    • Skills in public relations and communications.
    • CPR, First Aid, First Responder, and EMT fundamentals
    • Visitor impact management assessment tools
    • Strong skills with computers, iPads, and other technology.
    • Natural ecosystems and human influences.
    • Operation and basic maintenance needs of equipment utilized in park patrol.
    • Transport and tie-down requirements.
    • Traffic control training and techniques
    • Operations, services, and activities of park facilities and programs
    • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)

    Ability to:
    • Become knowledgeable of applicable municipal code.
    • Operate specialized communication systems.
    • Become knowledgeable and work effectively with law enforcement and emergency services protocols and procedures.
    • Become certified in Wilderness First Aid or similar certification.
    • Handle stressful & emergency situations.
    • Use current technology such as smart telephones and associated technology.
    • Safely use assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
    • Coordinate care for sick and/or injured animals.
    • Become knowledgeable of regional, county, and state fire, health, safety, and animal welfare codes pertinent to parks and trails.

    Successful candidates will have
    • Posses a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
    • One year of full-time experience as a Park Ranger, law enforcement officer, or similar experience.
    • Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges.
    • Possess, or obtain within three months of hire, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and First Aid certifications

    One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
    Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
    Ideal candidates will also have
    • Bachelor's degree in Natural Resources, Outdoor Recreation, Criminal Justice, or related field
    • Completion of Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator training
    • Experience with working with unhoused individuals or groups
    • Possess Wilderness First Aid certification

    Additional Information
    The Background check for this position includes a polygraph examination and fingerprinting.
    Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 frequently and 100 pounds occasionally with assistance. The ability to sit, stand, run, or walk for prolonged periods is also required.
