Hiring salary: $60,293.40 - $75,293.00/year

The Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Department's vision is to connect with the community and be acknowledged as an essential service defining the quality of life in Aurora by encouraging active lifestyles and creating healthy environments for people, nature, and the community. The Open Space & Natural Resources (OSNR) Division develops environmental education programs at our nature centers; maintains over 8,000 Acres of open space and over 100 miles of trails; manages outdoor recreation at 2 reservoirs.

This is a full time, salaried position. The status of this position will be exempt from the requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs supervisory functions related to public safety, education/interpretive programs, resource protection, and enforcement of rules and regulations related to sites and facilities assigned to the Open Space and Natural Resource Division
- Oversees and coordinates the enforcement of rules and provision of educational/interpretative programs related to sites and facilities
- Responsibilities include public safety
- Enforcement of City adopted rules and regulations, and serves as liaison with the City's Public Safety Departments
- Provides information related to sites within the natural open space, park, and the stream systems within an educational or informational format
- Ensures efficient coordination of volunteer programs
- Responsible for maintaining current knowledge of high plains ecosystems wildlife, vegetation, and legislation issues
- Reviews and recommends policies and procedures
- Manages the program budget planning
- Hires and supervises swim beach lifeguards, seasonal Park Rangers, and watercraft inspectors, at the reservoirs and is responsible for emergency response and rescue throughout the system
- Coordinates staff resources and assignments; makes recommendations regarding selecting, hiring, training, evaluating, and disciplining assigned employees
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
Education:
- Associate Degree with an emphasis in natural resources or open space and reservoir public safety, education, resource protection, and rules/regulation enforcement or a directly related. (Bachelor's Degree preferred.)
Experience:
- At least 4 years' progressively responsible experience in natural open space or resource site and facility rules enforcement and provision of educational/interpretative programs
- At least 2 years' supervisory experience. (Preferred)
An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of ecological principles and practices related to natural resources and stewardship of ecosystems, principles and practices of law enforcement related to parks, open space, reservoirs, and other natural resources; knowledge of methods, materials, equipment, and operating procedures utilized in reservoir, natural open space or resource site and facilities rules enforcement, and educational/interpretative programming.
Abilities:
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens; handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; communicate effectively both orally, graphically, and in writing; analyze problems to provide best options and assistance; establish and fulfill goals and objectives; and make effective graphic presentations.
Skills:
- Strong analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Skill is use of personal computers and related software that includes word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications. As first City contact with users of open space sites, employee must demonstrate proven experience in dealing with the public in enforcement and educational settings.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands:
- Heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds with or without assistance to handle emergency rescue operations
- Frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
- Considerable walking and standing in all types of terrain
- Frequent performance of activities requiring full range of body movement including bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing, and crawling
- Ability to swim;
- Considerable hand/eye coordination to operate hand/power tools, power boats, and computer
- Foot/eye coordination for operating boats, equipment, and vehicles
- Vision to read reports, documents, manuals, and other written material
- Effectively communicate with employees and citizens.
Work Environment:
- Frequently works outdoors with exposure to varying types of weather, dust, noise, and fumes.
Equipment Used:
- Operates motor vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, power boat, and motorized and/or handheld parks maintenance equipment.
