We expect to fill 9 vacancies at this time (one in each of the listed locations); however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available.
These are not Law Enforcement positions.Qualifications: NOTE: These are NOT Law Enforcement positions.

Minimum Qualifications for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-05:
You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:
  • Managing outdoor recreation management related projects.
  • Supervising crews or individuals performing land management type work.
  • Assessing and performing maintenance on outdoor recreation facilities such as trailheads, campgrounds, or trail systems.
OR
Education Substitution for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-05:
You must have successfully completed a four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours of related course work, such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources related to duties performed by a Park Ranger. Official transcripts must be submitted to support this.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-05:

A combination of specialized experience and education as listed above to meet total experience. The combined specialized experience and education must equal 100%. To compute, first determine your experience as a percentage of the experience required; then determine your education as a percentage of the education required. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100%. Official transcripts must be submitted to support this.

You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:

  • Assessing and performing maintenance on outdoor recreation facilities such as trailheads, campgrounds, or trail systems.
OR
Education Substitution for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-07:
You must have successfully completed one full academic year of graduate education (18 semester hours/27 quarter hours) with a major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position of Park Ranger duties. Official transcripts must be submitted to support this.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-07:

You may meet the qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full-time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12-month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying graduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of one year of graduate study leading to a master's degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100%. Official transcripts must be submitted to support this.
OR
Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) with a bachelor's degree for the 0025 Park Ranger Series at the GS-07:

S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled based on the courses listed above for Education. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.
  1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
  3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society - Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed at this link: Association of College Honor Societies (external link). Agencies considering eligibility based on any society not included in the following list must ensure that the honor society meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Candidates need to be willing to work weekends and holidays.
Physical Demands / Work Environment: Positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.
