As a member of the Wallowa Lake Management Unit, you would help in the operation and maintenance of multiple parks across scenic Wallowa County. Headquarters is at Wallowa Lake State Park, which sits at the head of Wallowa Lake in the shadow of glacial-carved mountains. Nearby Wallowa Falls Campground offers walk-in tent camping below popular trailheads. Downriver, Iwetemlaykin State Heritage Site and Minam State Recreation Area boast stunning views and rich history.
This is a year-round position and falls under the classification Park Ranger 1.

What you will do:
As a Park Ranger 1 you will assist in the protection, maintenance, operation and repair of State Park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment, and systems.
In this role, you will perform a variety of park operational tasks such as: janitorial work, landscape maintenance, facility maintenance, safety, and visitor services. Some work may require skills in: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, equipment repair, and landscape maintenance. Additionally, specialized skills in park maintenance and operations may be required. On a task specific basis, you may guide the work of individuals or teams composed of volunteers, seasonal, and/or temporary State Park employees.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

OR
  • An Associate's degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies or a related field; AND Six (6) months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
  • You must have a valid driver's license at the time of hire and throughout employment

  • Skill in performing plumbing, carpentry, electrical, painting, and grounds keeping tasks, including the safe and productive use of related tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently while educating the public about, and requesting compliance with, park rules and policies.
  • Skill in providing excellent customer service.
  • Experience using a computerized reservation system to register guests in a campground setting and reconciling fees.
  • Leadership experience and skills working with diverse work teams including seasonal staff, other permanent staff, volunteers, youth crews, or the general public.
  • Experience using mobile and desktop programs to track work, coordinate with others, and clearly communicate information to relevant parties.

  • The salary listed is at the non-PERS rate. Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) eligible employees will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay the 6% employee contribution to PERS.
