About the job:

The Park Maintenance Worker 2 leads and performs maintenance, obliteration, repair on trails, park grounds natural spaces, and natural areas. This position will work in the Natural Resources and Trails department in the Trails division while focusing on the maintenance of undeveloped natural areas, including riparian areas and areas with native vegetation. Duties will include trail maintenance of hard and soft surface trails, new trail construction, noxious weed management and native area restoration. This position will be responsible for monitoring park sites and trails and determining the extent of work to be performed. They will lead other employees who are assigned to this project. The Park Maintenance Worker 2 is the journey level in the Park Maintenance Worker classification and also performs the duties of a Park Maintenance Worker 1. The Park Maintenance Worker 2 is distinguished from the Park Maintenance Worker 1 by leading staff, projects, or programs in addition to performing higher level responsibilities.


A day in the life:

The information provided below encompasses the typical duties and capabilities linked with this classification. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintains and/or constructs both soft and hard surface trails in urban and mid-country environments.
  • Monitors trail assets to determine extent of work and maintenance to be performed.
  • Works with Trails Supervisor and Trails Coordinator to review trail projects in various landscapes including undeveloped natural areas, including riparian areas and areas with native vegetation.
  • Controls noxious weeds and help restores native areas in and around trail corridors, projects, and other areas as assigned.
  • Assists with fuels reduction projects in undeveloped natural areas by using power equipment including chainsaws and wood chippers.
  • Ability to operate mini-excavators, wood chippers, ATV's and skid-steers.
  • Implement planned trail projects that include maintenance, new construction, and restoration of existing assets.
  • Ability to maintain and use tools and equipment.
  • Reads and interprets construction drawings and blue prints.
  • Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and assess service needs for hand and power tools associated with trail maintenance and construction.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, blue prints, or other planning documents.
  • Leads the work of employees, trains employees in safe operation of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to safely secure and transport equipment by trailer.
  • Performs snow removal and ice control duties.
  • Maintains park trails, natural areas, open spaces, and trails.
  • Maintains equipment in clean and safe condition; operate equipment safely at all times.
  • Promotes safe conditions in all park facilities.
  • Cooperatively participates in work of crews while in progress; provide guidance and training in procedures and techniques as needed to ensure quality and quantity of work meets standards.
  • Ability to accept and integrate feedback graciously and give effective feedback to team members.
  • Assists with set up and operation of special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Contributes to a positive and constructive working environment.

  • Reports child abuse or suspected child abuse as a mandatory reporter under Oregon law.


What you'll need for success:
Strong Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices and methods used in horticulture, arbor culture, noxious weed control, Park Maintenance repair, forestry, trail construction best practices and resource management;
  • Maintenance and safe operation of powered equipment and hand tools;
  • Effective employee training techniques; general knowledge of effective supervisory practices;
  • Basic computer programs and data entry; and
  • Basic arithmetic, spelling, English and grammar.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing, including by phone, e-mail or in person;
  • Work independently while also able to work cooperatively with others;
  • Safely operate equipment, mowers, tractors, hand and power tools;
  • Effectively understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Requirements:

What We're Looking For:
Education, Experience, and Training:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent; AND
  2. Three (3) years of experience in Park Maintenance, horticulture and landscaping, Natural Resources, forest management, irrigation technology, or construction; OR
  3. Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.


Licenses and Certifications:

  1. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Oregon driver’s license.
  2. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, a valid Basic First Aid/CPR certification.
  3. Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, a valid Public Pesticide Applicator’s license.
  4. Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, a chainsaw certification.


Supervisor received:

Works under the supervision of the Trails Supervisor. Follows standard processes and procedures without supervision but confirms changes to standard practices and significant decision in advance.


Working conditions:

The following are working conditions, including environmental and physical demands, required for this classification.

  • Duties are performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather including heat, cold, humidity, wind, snow, and rain.
  • Exposure to various hazardous chemical, fumes, and high noise levels.
  • Daily standing and walking over uneven terrain, such as parks and trails with up/down inclines, paved and unpaved surfaces for sustained periods of time.
  • Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves, reflective vests and eye protection are required.
  • Daily operation of a motor vehicle on public roadways.

  • Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and constant use of hands and arms and may require overhead reaching.
  • Occasional lifting, moving, dragging, pushing and carrying of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds unassisted).
  • Occasional crouching, crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing or balancing.
  • May require working for emergency call-outs or snow removal during off duty hours including some holidays.
