Purpose of Position
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
This position is the third classification in the Parks Custodian and Maintenance Worker series. Performs custodial duties to maintain all City buildings including City Hall, the Public Works complex, the Police Department, Wastewater Complex, and other City buildings as needed. An employee in this classification is distinguished from the Custodian I and Custodian II classifications in that in addition to performing senior custodial functions in one or more assigned buildings, the Custodian III performs at an advanced level, and the position may include directing and or training Custodian I and Custodian II positions and or Temporary Employees.
This description covers the most significant essential and auxiliary duties performed, but does not include other occasional work which may be similar, related to, or logical assignment to the position.

Essential Job Functions
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Cleans floors and carpeting; washes interior and exterior windows and glass doors; sanitizes all rest rooms and breakrooms; picks up and removes trash and recyclables; cleans furniture; dusts all surfaces; washes walls.
Performs minor maintenance duties on occasion at City of Redmond locations to include interior and exterior paint touchups, replacing lightbulbs, and minor landscaping duties (weeding plant beds).
Performs winter maintenance duties on occasion at City of Redmond locations. May remove snow from sidewalks or sand walkways when icy conditions occur.
Promotes an effective, responsive, and value-based organizational culture. Champions the values of the City through example and accountability. Work is reviewed through results achieved, meetings, spot checks of work in progress, and an evaluation of results achieved.
Operates at an advanced capacity in custodial and maintenance abilities.
May direct and or train individuals operating at a Custodian I and or Custodian II level.
Act as a senior Custodian within the department.
Operate a City vehicle regularly to perform custodial and maintenance duties in various City buildings.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Mandatory Requirements:
High school diploma, or GED equivalent, plus five (5) years verifiable work experience in commercial custodian work. Must have advanced knowledge of supplies, materials and equipment used in commercial custodial work and commercial facilities maintenance.
Understand and execute complex oral and written instructions; express ideas and convey information effectively, orally and in writing; maintain confidentiality; deal effectively with frequent interruptions and several situations at one time; establish priorities and organize own workload; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public and private offices, and the general public; and effectively use business telephone etiquette.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE requirements as outlined in the position specific PPE Hazard Assessment Certification.
Desirable Qualifications:
For desirable requirements to be considered, one must have met the minimum requirements noted above:
  • Six (6) years or more verifiable custodian and facilities maintenance work experience
  • Six (6) years or more verifiable commercial custodian and facilities maintenance work experience
  • Four (4) years verifiable work experience in a City/County government setting
  • Extensive knowledge of facilities maintenance
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain First Aid / CPR certification within six (6) months of employment.

Special Requirements/Licenses:
This position will require the use of City vehicles. Possession of, or required to obtain within thirty (30) days from date of hire, a valid Oregon driver's license. Must have a safe driving record.
Work Environment
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Work is performed independently during an afternoon/evening shift often without direct supervision after assignment of duties. The employee generally works under the direct supervision of the Operations and Maintenance Manager, who gives instructions and specific objectives, and reviews work on specific projects for accuracy and adherence to standards.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is not a supervisory position. Although supervision is not normally a responsibility of positions in this classification, the Custodian III may serve as an advanced worker on certain projects, giving direction and guidance to Custodian I and Custodian II positions, temporary workers, and volunteers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the manual duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arm; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to twenty (20) pounds and occasionally team lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability to hear audible alarms and cell phone calls.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Hand power tools, heavy custodian floor maintenance equipment, paint equipment, small snowplow. This position requires use of City vehicles.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works exposed to outside weather conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employees in this position will participate in the City of Redmond Hearing Conservation Program.
This position may be required to workdays, nights, weekends, and holidays.
