Program Overview:
Our Parent Center (PC) is housed at the Dale Jones Burch Neighborhood Center - a newly renovated historic firehouse, which operates as a satellite program of Henry Street Settlement's Health and Wellness Division. The Parent Center is a privately funded free parenting education and support program that provide 6, 8 and/or 12-week parenting education and/or support groups, 1-time workshops on-site at the Parent Center and throughout Henry Street's Lower East Side campus including School-Based Mental Health Clinics, family shelters, daycare, local schools, and online at Zoom. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Parent Center staff/intern(s) have been working in a hybrid model, offering groups/workshops online via Zoom, and onsite by appointment. The goal is to increase onsite programming as per programmatic/agency guidelines now that COVID rates of infection have declined significantly, and many New Yorkers are vaccinated.
Role Overview:
The role of the PC Social Worker is to conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial intakes and to enroll parents into a range of parenting education and/or support groups, workshops and/or to conduct short-term parent coaching/brief psychotherapy/dyadic parent-child intervention(s) (6-12 sessions) and/or 1-time parenting consultations, and to facilitate/co-facilitate groups and workshops. It is also to further develop group and/or workshop topics/content spanning from pregnancy to early childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood, and in response to the changing needs of the community.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Social Work, or Masters in Mental Health Counseling required. LMSW/MHC-LP/LMHC preferred.
- 1-2+ years of experience providing parenting education/support services to parents, expectant mothers, and/or children ages 0-18
- Capacity to work independently and/or with other Parent Center staff/intern(s) to facilitate parenting groups and/or to develop and conduct workshops and brief psychotherapy, parent coaching and/or dyadic parent-child intervention(s) (6-12 weeks).
- Familiarity with short-term brief psychotherapy, parent coaching and/or dyadic parent-child or parent-infant intervention(s).
- Strong assessment skills and knowledge of infant, early childhood/childhood, and/or adolescent development issues, family systems theory, and/or healthy parenting skills. Familiarity with Family Court and ACS/child welfare system, public benefits, income support programs, and housing issues helpful.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills; ability to work collaboratively with NRC/Parent Center staff/intern(s), case managers, health enrollers and/or community health workers to meet the biopsychosocial needs of parents/families.
- Computer proficiency including database management (Foothold Awards, Microsoft Office Excel).
- Bilingual language skills preferred (Chinese/Spanish) and not required.
- Available to work one evening per week M-F, 9 AM - 5 AM (regular); 1 evening per week (11-7 PM) as needed.
Responsibilities:
- Respond to PC Central Intake Calls and referrals. Conduct bio-psychosocial comprehensive intake assessments and enroll parents in groups/workshops and/or provide one-time parent consultations and/or parent coaching/brief psychotherapy/parent-child or parent-infant dyadic interventions (6 to 12 sessions).
- Facilitate and/or Co-facilitate a range of parenting groups (Parenting Journey, Ackerman Institute for the Family Bright Beginnings, Active Parenting Now! Parenting Children with Special Needs, Parenting Discoveries, etc.) and workshops on a range of topics both on-site, off-site and/or remotely online at Zoom.
- Work collaboratively with DJBNC Program Director, Parent Center staff/intern(s), case managers, health enrollers and community health workers to assess a parent and/or child's presenting problems and concerns, and provide referrals as needed for case management, health enrollment, outpatient mental health, workforce development, etc. and/or to local community-based organizations for additional services.
- Provide crisis intervention as needed.
- Participate in individual/group supervision/team meetings; timely documentation of confidential records (intakes, follow-up case notes, group notes), data entry/database maintenance; assist with preparation of flyers for special events and/or data collection for grant funding reports and/or MailChimp newsletters.
- Help to organize and recruit program participants for quarterly special events such as Back to School, Mother's Day, and so on.
- Advocate in writing/by phone when appropriate to ensure parental/family needs are addressed; other duties as assigned by supervisor. Willingness to work in a hybrid on-site/off-site manner; 3 days onsite and 2 days remote following completion of training/orientation.
Essential Physical Job Functions:
- Able to use a computer to access Zoom and to communicate with clients remotely.
