Organizing Interns (5 vacant positions)
Locations: Fresno, Merced, Tulare, Madera
$22.00 per hour
Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Temporary, At-Will
April 1, 2024 - June 1, 2024

The impact you will have:
The Organizing Intern is a key part of our organizing team for engaging young activists ages 18-24 in the Central Valley to build power at city, county and state levels. This position will execute membership outreach strategies, recruit volunteers, engage voters, and voter registration, assist with and plan events, support agenda planning and meeting facilitation, and train members and volunteers on issues and actions needed to advance power building in the Central Valley. Working under the supervision of the Membership Organizer, the person in this role must have some applicable experience in organizing Gen Zs and Millenials. This position also works closely with the Membership Director, Field Director, and Narrative & Influence Director. While employed by Power California, this position mainly carries out the work for Power California 501(c)3 and its sibling 501(c)(4) nonprofit, PowerCA Action.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Seasonal Voter Outreach (20%)

  • Utilizes web-based technology to contact voters and young activists via peer-to peer texting, phone calls, email and relational organizing
  • Works 2-3 hour sessions, usually 3-4 days a week, adhering to legally-vetted script, as scheduled by supervisor
  • Conducts voter registration through direct canvassing and classroom presentations on community college campuses, in conjunction with educators and school staff, and at community events
  • Engages in conversations with voters and peers in a persuasive, professional manner
  • Reports outreach progress on a weekly basis to lead staff, entering and updating outreach data in spreadsheets when needed

Membership Outreach (45%)
  • Conducts membership recruitment presentations on community college campuses
  • Ability to effectively course-correct to meet membership recruitment and presentation goals
  • Helps recruit and train other young activists in their region by conducting outreach on college campuses and at community events
  • Conducts 1:1's with potential members to bring them into our organizing work
  • Assists with regional cultural activities and outreach events in-person and virtually events to bring members together
  • Supports administrative work, including, but not limited to, taking notes during key meetings and confirming attendees, as assigned
  • Reports outreach progress on a weekly basis to lead staff, entering outreach data, petitions and/or pledge forms in spreadsheet when needed data entry to manage membership contacts

Membership Engagement (25%)
  • Assists supervisor with orientations on our movement building electoral organizing work for 18- to 25-year-olds
  • Supports the development of agendas, curriculum, and facilitation of in person and virtual events
  • Works with supervisor to develop and facilitate agendas for membership meetings and events
  • Documents student-led activities and narratives for our social media channels, as directed by narrative and influence staff, when needed
  • Supports logistical planning and event management as assigned

Other Duties (10%)
  • Carries out other administrative tasks as assigned
  • Works in good faith to support the overall stability and effectiveness of the organization
  • Submits all required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner
  • Additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
  • Minimum one campaign cycle (or the equivalent of X months) of experience organizing 18 - 24 or community organizing in low-income communities of color
  • Demonstrated success in outreach
  • Excellent time management and organization; works well both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with shifting timelines
  • Experience working/partnering with young people of color, low-income, immigrants and refugees and/or LGBTQIA+ communities
  • Strong computer literacy, including experience in Microsoft suite and Google Docs
  • Ability to consistently act and interact with integrity, compassion and openness to feedback
  • Works well independently and in collaboration with others
  • Excellent ability to communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds
  • Some evenings and weekends required, primarily during campaign seasons
  • Has cell phone with adequate data plan and home internet connection with adequate speed
  • Must have reliable, timely means of transportation

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
  • Familiarity with grassroots organizing, advocacy and electoral engagement techniques a plus
  • Bilingual or multilingual with English-Spanish skills a plus
  • Have the ability to drive; valid California driver's license and, if driving own car, proof of adequate insurance coverage required

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position, at a desk or similar, 40% of the time. Time spent in stationary location includes operating a computer and relevant peripherals and communicating via phone
  • Regularly required by the duties of this job to move, ascend and descend, remain stationary, position oneself to access and operate machines and/or equipment and supplies, communicate, exchange information and observe details at close and medium range within work surroundings.
  • Regularly/occasionally moves up to 30 pounds. Typically involves moving campaign material/event set-up material/PPE/other materials as needed.
