Group/Division
With over 40 years of semiconductor process control experience, chipmakers around the globe rely on KLA to ensure that their fabs ramp next-generation devices to volume production quickly and cost-effectively. Enabling the movement towards advanced chip design, KLA's Global Products Group (GPG), which is responsible for creating all of KLA's metrology and inspection products, is looking for the best and the brightest research scientist, software engineers, application development engineers, and senior product technology process engineers. The Broadband Plasma Division (BBP) provides market-leading patterned wafer optical inspection systems for leading-edge IC manufacturing. Logic, foundry, and memory customers depend on BBP products to detect yield-critical defects for process debug and excursion monitoring at advanced process nodes. BBP flagship products include the 29xx and 39xx series which leverage Broadband Plasma technology to capture a wide range of defects with ultimate sensitivity at the optical inspection speeds needed for inline defect monitoring.
Job Description/Preferred Qualifications
KLA is looking for summer interns at our Milpitas, California location. This position provides an opportunity to work with a team of scientists on projects aiming to develop Organic materials to enhance the performance of next generation defect inspector. The intern will work on new and established methods to develop organic functional materials to support higher signal to noise required for future inspection. To ensure the new materials meet performance requirements, the individual will also perform characterization tests to determine chemical, physical, mechanical, and optical properties of the newly devised materials.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform multi-step organic reactions and purifications under the supervision of senior scientists.
  • Analyze products using various instrumentation and interpret experimental results.
  • Record observation, draft technical report in well-organized manners and report findings during internal meetings.
  • Maintain a safe/clean/organized environment in the lab and follow laboratory safety compliant protocols.
  • Assist in developing research ideas which may involve literature searches.

Requirements:
  • Enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Chemistry, or related disciplinary areas with emphasis in Organic Chemistry, material synthesis of functional organic molecules, and material characterization. Individuals who have finished a university degree will also be considered.
  • Hands-on experience with setting up reactions, common analytical techniques (TLC, NMR, FT-IR), chromatographic purification, distillation is preferred.
  • Theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience with photophysical characterization techniques such as UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and TCSPC is plus.
  • Ability to analyze data using software such as mestrenova, origin and excel.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Pursuing undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Chemical engineering, or related field with a focus on organic synthesis.
  • 6-12 months of practical laboratory experience in synthesis of organic molecules and polymers.
  • Requires less than 1 year of related experience
