Come join a rapidly growing team as an Optical Engineer in Facebook Reality Labs. You will be responsible for design, testing and productizing optical systems and sub-components that are core to delivering transformative experiences in Oculus AR/VR products. You will join an agile team that is laser-focused on releasing imaging optics systems and sub-components that are fully hardened for high-volume manufacturing (HVM). We are seeking an engineer experienced with design and evaluation of imaging optics systems and sub-components; able to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams and focused on execution while providing clear and effective communication to remove barriers across teams.
- Conceptualize, design, develop, validate, prototype and develop imaging optics systems and sub-components for our current and next generation AR/VR products.
- Establish and document Optical Engineering specifications, including key performance metrics and test requirements for optical systems and components, through rigorous tolerance analysis, assessing manufacturing capabilities and understanding customer-facing requirements.
- Lead design validation, lab characterization and failure analysis of optical components and systems.
- Drive the vendor for maturity in optical process, performance, yield, quality, reliability, and ramp new optical components and systems for full mass production readiness.
- Contribute to the future optics technology roadmap.
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years of experience in developing optical systems with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Knowledge and experience with optics fundamentals including imaging, illumination, radiometry and colorimetry, physical and geometric optics.
- 2+ years of experience with hands-on test, prototype build, debugging, and calibration of optical systems, equipment, and instrumentation.
- Hands-on experience using optical instruments such as interferometer, spectrometer, scatterometer, lab microscope, Image Master type lens qualification tools, etc.
- 5+ years of experience with at least one optical CAD (e.g., Zemax, CodeV for imaging system design/tolerancing) and experience with at least one non-sequential optical CAD (e.g., Zemax, LightTools, Fred, ASAP).
- Experience collaborating with internal cross-functional teams and external optics vendors.
- Experience to operate in heavily cross functional and ambiguous work environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters or PhD in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related degree.
- 10+ years of experience in developing optical systems with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Experience with multiple full life cycle product launches (preferably in consumer electronics).
- Experience with polarization optics, thin films and coatings.
- Experience with NIR optics.
- Proficiency in optical system design, tolerance analysis, integration, and testing.
- Optical systems analysis and modeling experience. e.g., estimating SNR in optical systems, calculating light budgets for low photon detection systems.
- Experience in de-bugging and failure analysis of optical systems including knowledge of typical failure analysis equipment.
- Proficiency in data acquisition and image processing in MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW.
