Nature of Work

The position requires innovation, flexibility and the ability to work across healthcare systems. The psychiatrist or Advanced Practice Provider will be based in the University of Colorado Hospital Emergency Department and will perform emergency psychiatry services.

Please note, this is an Open Rank position and could be categorized as Clinical Instructor, Clinical Senior Instructor, Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor or Clinical Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below.

Examples of Work Performed

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Assessing patients in crisis including relevant laboratory tests and imaging
  • Managing common emergency presentations including agitation and suicidal states
  • Developing brief, focused treatment plans
  • Prescribing medications
  • Determining appropriate level of care and disposition
  • Working with a team including Emergency Physicians, Behavioral Health Evaluators, nurses,  technicians, pharmacists and security staff
  • Keeping abreast of the latest developments in field

Supervision Received

This position reports to the Director of Emergency Services and Department of Psychiatry

Supervision Exercised

This position will not supervise other employees.

Salary and Benefits:

Shifts are either 6 or 12 hours and are paid at the rate of $1000 per 6 hour shift or $2000 per 12 hour shift. 

The hiring rate (or budgeted rate) for these positions has been established at: 

Clinical Instructor: $2,000 per 12-hour shift

Clinical Senior Instructor: $2,000 per 12-hour shift

Clinical Assistant Professor: $2,000 per 12-hour shift

Clinical Associate Professor: $2,000 per 12-hour shift

Clinical Professor: $2,000 per 12-hour shift

For the moonlighting hours worked. This is non-negotiable as it is a department standard rate.

This is a non-benefits eligible position. 

The above salary rate represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate at the time of posting.

Minimum Qualifications  

Clinical Instructor: 1-3 years of clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience.  Minimum degree qualifications: NP/APN, DO, MD, CO Physician License or Eligible for CO Physician License.  Board Certified, Eligible, or Eligible by the time of hire in Psychiatry.

Clinical Senior Instructor: 1-3 years of clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience. Minimum degree qualifications: NP/APN, DO, MD, CO Physician License or Eligible for CO Physician License.  Board Certified, Eligible, or Eligible by the time of hire in Psychiatry.

Clinical Assistant Professor: 1-3 years of clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience.  Minimum degree qualifications: NP/APN, DO, MD, CO Physician License or Eligible for CO Physician License.  Board Certified, Eligible, or Eligible by the time of hire in Psychiatry.

Clinical Associate Professor: 4-7 years of clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience.  Minimum degree qualifications: NP/APN, DO, MD, CO Physician License or Eligible for CO Physician License.  Board Certified, Eligible, or Eligible by the time of hire in Psychiatry.

Clinical Professor: 7 years of clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience.  Minimum degree qualifications: NP/APN, DO, MD, CO Physician License or Eligible for CO Physician License.  Board Certified, Eligible, or Eligible by the time of hire in Psychiatry.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following:

  • Clinical skill is required for conducting brief and targeted assessments in integrated care settings
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Capacity for flexibility and adaptability in different work situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentations to community audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple tasks and maintain a well-organized work environment. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students.
