Job Duties:
The City of Virginia Beach is committed to fostering a culture of safety and is looking to hire a dedicated individual as the Occupational Safety Manager. This role will lead citywide programs dedicated to creating and maintaining a safe workplace for our employees.
The successful candidate will be a leader with a passion for Occupational Safety, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, an analytical mindset with the ability to identify trends, conduct risk assessments, and a proven track record in developing and implementing effective safety training and programs. This position requires strategic planning, program development and hands on management of safety initiatives to safeguard employees and assets.
Responsibilities:
- Manage daily operation of the Occupational Safety division.
- Design, implement and manage comprehensive Occupational Safety programs that align with industry standards.
- Deliver engaging safety training programs to enhance employee’s awareness and reduce workplace injury.
- Supervise and mentor safety personnel.
- Oversee workplace audits to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with local state and federal safety regulations.
- Manage all investigations related to work injuries and illness and implementing corrective actions to prevent reoccurrences.
- Collaborate with internal departments and regulatory agencies to communicate safety initiatives.
- Direct industrial hygiene testing investigations and analysis to identify trends requiring attention.
- Develop standards and recommendations for Occupational Safety and health related equipment or techniques.
- Ensure development and or revisions of protocols, policies, and procedures.

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMIUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires Bachelor’s degree in health, safety, environmental science or related engineering or science field and seven (7) years of experience, including two (2) years in a supervisory or lead role, in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as Safety Engineer, Industrial Hygienist, or Environmental Protection and Regulatory Compliance or any combination of education and experience equivalent to eleven (11) years of experience, inclusive of two years in a supervisory role.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned.

Preferences:
Bachelor’s and/or Master's degree in Health, Safety and Environmental Science and/or related Engineering or Science field.
Safety Instructor certifications such as ASP/CSP, CIH and/or similar certifications.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local health and safety laws and regulations
Experience in developing and implementing safety education programs.
Experience conducting risk assessments and/or implementing preventative programs.
Supervisory experience.
