Job description

SUMMARY

The Peri anesthesia Supervisor assumes responsibility for the nursing care delivered within the patient education, preoperative and postoperative areas of the surgical service department according to evidenced-based practices. The role leads and guides members of the team in the delivery of care and services in accordance with the philosophy of Riverwood Healthcare Center and in compliance with the standards of professional nursing practice and all state laws and regulations; works collaboratively with other support services within the organization, utilizes resources efficiently and economically; demonstrates leadership skills by effectively communicating, influencing, facilitating, and problem-solving; demonstrates professionalism through knowledge, self-direction, accountability and sound judgment.

This position provides care for or assistance to patients of all ages, including: newborns, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and older adults. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Directly supervises employees by carrying out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws/regulations (JC, CMS,).
  • Is familiar with and stays current on ASPAN (Association of Perianesthesia Nurses) standards and recommended practice and remains current with changes in practice and implements changes as appropriate.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, rewarding/disciplining, performance appraisals of personnel assigned to areas of supervision.
  • Serves as a liaison between the anesthesia department and the perioperative department, working collaboratively with CRNA’s to ensure safe, effective, and continuous care throughout the peri operative spectrum.  
  • Oversees the orientation plan for new employees in the perianesthesia setting.  Serves as one of the credentialed trainers for the unit’s orientation needs. Responsible for staff development; working collaboratively with the nursing educator to provide staff training and establish staff competency.
  • Responsible for responding to complaints or patient advocacy issues in the assigned area of supervision.
  • Responsible for writing and updating assigned Surgical Services policies and procedures pertaining to preoperative and postoperative areas.
  • Oversees the daily schedule, ensuring that appropriate resources are available to provide safe and efficient patient care.
  • Works collaboratively with the Manager of Surgical Services communicating the needs of the department in a timely manner.
  • Assists the Manager of Surgical Services with budget and Capital Equipment planning.
  • Participates in committees as needed or assigned, such as Patient Care Improvement, Infection Prevention, Medication Safety, Monthly Staff Meetings and Surgery Committee Meetings.
  • Responsible for the quality assurance plan and reporting for area assigned. Communicates quality assurance findings to staff and implements resolutions as indicated.
  • Maintains skills to provide direct patient care in all areas of supervision.
  • Is a designated “super user” for Epic and assists others as needed. 
  • Evaluates and approves overtime, call time, staffing needs.
  • Responsible for updating Physician order sets as needed, assuring they are reviewed and approved annually. Establishes order sets for new providers, service lines or procedures.
  • Responds to all emergency situations and assigns staff accordingly in such situations.
  • Is responsible to investigate and respond to unusual occurrence reports and medication errors, ensuring that the appropriate reports are completed for ongoing performance improvement.
  • Monitors patient safety, comfort, care, discharge and education plans to ensure quality care.
  • Carries out duties safely and uses safety devices provided to protect self and others.  Report safety hazards as appropriate.
  • Safeguards security and confidentiality of data/information according to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Assumes responsibility for self development, maintains required competencies and completion of mandatory educational requirements.  Seeks learning opportunities.
  • Promotes service excellence by demonstrating polite, cooperative and respectful behavior to both internal and external customers.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directly supervises a varying number of employees. 
  • Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with an associate degree or higher.
  • Current Minnesota RN license. 
  • BLS and ACLS Certified
  • Experience in perianesthesia nursing required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:   

  • Graduate with BSN degree in nursing or higher
  • One year Supervisory/Management experience preferred
  • CPAN (Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse) or CAPA (Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse)
