Job description

The Assistant Director of PROS helps to oversee mental health and performance psychology services that are delivered by PROS staff. In overseeing, the Assistant Director is tasked with serving as the primary lead on all assigned teams and functioning independently as a mental health and performance psychology professional within the OU Athletic Department. As needed, the Assistant Director assumes responsibilities as delegated by the Director.

The Assistant Director is responsible for delivering individual counseling and performance psychology services to approximately 550 student-athletes and 21 teams, act as PROS point-person for a selection of OU teams (i.e., approximately 4-6 teams), offer assessment and testing services for ADHD and learning disorders, and supervise master's-level practicum trainees, doctoral level practicum trainees, and/or doctoral interns as a part of expected clinical supervisory duties within the Oklahoma Sport Psychology Consortium, an APA-accredited doctoral internship housed within PROS.

The Assistant Director also acts as a leader in the overall functioning of the PROS Department and serves on the PROS leadership team in collaboration with the Director of PROS. The Assistant Director also works closely with other departmental staff (e.g., athletic training, sport science, sports nutrition, strength and conditioning staff, academics, athletic directors, etc.) for continuity of care to support holistic student-athlete well-being. The Assistant Director further works in conjunction with the athletic medicine staff to manage referrals ensuring comprehensive and coordinated care for student-athletes needing outside services (psychiatry, in-patient care, etc.). The Assistant Director may also participate on the Athletics Wellness Team and/or individual team meetings (e.g., staff meetings, performance team meetings) to additionally support interdisciplinary collaboration. The Assistant Director may also provide team consultation as needed for their assigned teams, including meeting with coaches to assess the team's well-being and performance needs, and educating student-athletes about psychological skills that can enhance well-being and performance. The Assistant Director may also travel with teams to competitions and away games/meets as requested by their assigned teams. The Assistant Director is further expected to be on call for after-hours and urgent/crisis situations as needed.

  • Provide effective supervision to master's-level practicum trainees, doctoral level practicum trainees, and/or doctoral interns
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines
  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information as it pertains to clinical care
  • Able to produce reports and complete work within deadlines
  • Able to work well with interdepartmental teams and initiatives
  • Able to create and deliver effective training presentations
  • Committed to confidentiality regulated by university, state, and federal rules and regulations (e.g., HIPAA bylaws)
  • Commitment to consistently demonstrating the highest ethical standards in all practices with coaches, staff, and student-athletes
  • Able to gain and maintain working knowledge of university, Big 12, and NCAA rules and regulations

Required Education: Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology or School Psychology AND: 

  • 24 months as a Counseling Psychologist or School Psychologist.

Certifications:

  • Certification as a Licensed Psychologist by the Oklahoma State Board of Examiners of Psychologist or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire date

Departmental Preferences:

  • Have certifications or licensed by professional organizations (e.g., APA, ACA, AASP-CMPC)
  • Experience working in competitive athletic environments
  • Excellent clinical skills and background from a diverse range of experiences within the mental health field.
  • Experience working with the mental health and/or performance psychology needs of athletes. Preference is given for experience with elite Division I student-athletes
  • Familiarity with psychological testing procedures and assessment batteries (e.g., WAIS-IV, WISC-5, WIAT-IV, CPT-3, WMS-IV, etc.)
  • Growth-minded and open to feedback from coaches, staff, student-athletes, and colleagues
  • Strong ethical and professional foundations that are central to their professional identity
  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (or CMPC-eligible) from the Association for Applied Sport Psychology
  • Member of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) Mental Health Registry

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to see including color, depth perception and clarity hear, and communicate verbally  
  • Frequent exposure to pressure caused by deadlines and busy periods; may be required to travel
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
