Job Description

***This is a remote position***

The Managing Director of JusticeAid works in close collaboration with the all-volunteer Board of Directors to manage the day-to-day operations in a virtual environment of our charitable nonprofit 501(c)(3) grantmaking organization. JusticeAid produces concerts and hosts public conversations and other events to raise money and awareness for nonprofit civil rights organizations that are selected each year by the Board of Directors as our “grantee partners.” Visit our website at justiceaid.org to learn more about us.

JusticeAid seeks a Managing Director who will raise the profile of the organization and grow its audiences, increasing revenue through effective fundraising campaigns and communications, including social media. The Managing Director will be a compelling communicator with demonstrated success raising money for a public charity (experience as a grant-maker is a plus). We are looking for an experienced nonprofit organization team player, who will assume primary responsibility for fundraising strategy and communications while ensuring that our administrative functions are working at the highest level. The Managing Director will also be an organized project manager, willing to be boots on the ground when JusticeAid hosts in-person events.

Our ideal candidate has a background in civil rights, loves music, art, and people, is comfortable with donor and financial management in a tax-exempt environment, is a terrific communicator, and has experience cultivating and managing gifts from individual donors, corporate sponsors, and small foundations.

Essential Job Functions:

Manage day-to-day operations of the organization including: (i) Communications: Manage external communications (website, eblasts, PR, and social media) crafting compelling messages that will grow our audience; Supervise communications consultant(s); (ii) Accounting and Finance: coordinate with an independent CPA, outside bookkeeper/comptroller and the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee to manage finances prudently and within budget; provide the Board of Directors with periodic financial reports and develop annual budgets; (iii) Fundraising: Spearhead and implement fundraising campaigns, assisting board members with donor cultivation; Produce direct mail and digital appeals; acknowledge donations and manage donor records; (iv) Event Planning and Execution: Working closely with an outside music production consultant and our grantee partners, coordinate planning, publicity, venue contracts, and ticket sales for music concerts (typically two a year) and for free public educational event(s), and serve as on-site point person for each event; (v) Support for Board of Directors: Support board officers and committee chairs by drafting agendas, scheduling and preparing materials for board and committee meetings, drafting minutes and ensure follow-up on decisions and actions; (vi) Compliance: Ensure timely and accurate legal and tax compliance and adequate insurance coverage.

Qualifications:

Demonstrate a passion for the mission of the organization; possess ability to direct and coordinate activities; be able to build and maintain effective relationships and partnerships; and exhibit independent judgment and initiative in the development, implementation, administration and evaluation of programs, budgets, communications, and relationships with donors and consultants. Must be a self-starter; able to maintain confidentiality and take initiative. Previous experience with management and development of nonprofit organizations is desirable, as is facility with software related to communications, donor management, financial reporting and budgets. We presently use Wordpress for our website, Quickbooks for financial records, and Network for Good for our CRM.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • At least 5+ years of broad financial and operations management experience.

  • A Bachelor’s Degree; advanced degrees preferred

  • Experience being the final reviewer for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting, and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area.

  • Experience overseeing a human resources function preferred.

  • Ability to communicate financial concepts to, and effectively collaborate with, programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not have finance backgrounds.

  • A successful track record in setting priorities, and keen analytic, organization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and collaborate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

  • The ability to multi-task and wear many hats in a fast-paced environment.

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to civil rights and the work of JusticeAid, a cheerful attitude and gracious demeanor.

JusticeAid is committed to building a diverse team in an inclusive culture that draws on the strengths of people with a variety of identities, backgrounds, perspectives and skills. People of color, women, people with disabilities, indigenous people, older people, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants and people from other underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. It is JusticeAid’s policy to prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind and to establish and maintain a work environment free from discrimination and harassment.

Hours and location: The expectation is that the Managing Director will work on average 30 hours per week. Specific work hours are flexible, with full time attention leading up to concerts and events. JusticeAid is a virtual organization, but the Managing Director is expected to attend occasional in person meetings, as well as any public events hosted by JusticeAid. (Reasonable travel and lodging expenses will be defrayed.) Presently, there are two concerts annually, and up to two in-person educational events, as well as two in-person board meetings that each take place in NYC and DC. Most meetings are ZOOM calls.

Applications are being considered on a rolling basis, but for priority consideration, submit by February 29, 2024.

As a smaller organization, this position necessarily spans several areas, and we realize that even the best candidates may not possess expertise in all. JusticeAid presently enjoys contract support in the areas of bookkeeping, accounting, design and communications, as well as pro bono federal tax representation. The new Managing Director will have the benefit of overlapping with the current MD for onboarding and will work with the Board of Directors to determine the shape of the relationships with outsourced consultants going forward.
