What are Trust Fund Positions?
Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. OVERVIEW


Come join a mission driven institution and be a central contributor to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York! The National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center, opened in 1994. It is located in Lower Manhattan in the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, a Beaux-Arts building designed by architect Cass Gilbert and completed in 1907. The museum features year-round exhibitions, dance and music performances, children’s workshops, family and school programs and film screenings that present the diversity of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and the strength of their cultures from the earliest times to the present.
The National Museum of the American Indian in New York seeks enthusiastic applicants for a Museum Technician (History) position in the Family and Youth Experiences (FYE) Department. The FYE Team provides educational, innovative, and engaging interpretive programs for families, teachers, and students.
The Museum Technician (History) works in all public spaces, presenting educational programs developed for museum school groups, families, and visitors and assisting with the development of new education-based experiences for the museum galleries and other public museum spaces.
Bilingual English/Spanish ability is encouraged.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Present and support established educational programs, targeted for families and youth (Pre-K to 12th grade) as developed by the Family & Youth Experiences (FYE) Manager.
  • Present educational experiences in a variety of settings for long periods of time for the museum’s visiting public.
  • Assist in the development of new education-based experiences for the galleries, imagiNATIONS Activity Center (iAC), and classroom for consideration and approval by the FYE Manager.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the imagiNATIONS Activity Center by observing iAC procedures for crowd control, customer service, handling collections, etc.
  • Work closely with Visitor Services Team and mentor interns and up to 40 volunteers who assist in the delivery of programs and information, ensuring that all programs are delivered with cultural accuracy and effective instructional techniques.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS


  • Knowledge of the history, social and material culture, religion, language, and contemporary life of American Indians.
  • Ability to present programs that are unfamiliar or difficult to Pre-K to 12ᵗʰ grade school audiences using educational concepts, principles, procedures and pedagogy sufficient to that grade level.
  • Ability to assist in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of educational programs.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements affecting museum operations, i.e., customer service standards, crowd management, emergency procedures, etc.
  • Ability to apply interpersonal skills using empathy, tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity to work with and maintain positive relationships with people from multicultural and diverse backgrounds.
