Summary
The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Located on New York City's Museum Mile, in the historic Carnegie Mansion and Garden, Cooper Hewitt is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design.

This Merit Promotion position is open to Current Federal Employees and Former Federal Employees with permanent status or reinstatement eligibility. Duties
The Museum Technician is a critical member of the Registrar team, carrying out the art handling duties for the museum and its off-site storage in Newark, New Jersey.
In this position, you will:
  • Safely handle, pack, and install irreplaceable works of art, ensuring that CHSDM and lender requirements are met. This includes the meticulous recording and reporting of in-going and out-going objects.
  • Install and handle objects for exhibitions (including offsite exhibitions).
  • Safely pack objects for transport to and from Newark, New Jersey, including paper objects, textiles, jewelry, ceramics, porcelains, glass and metalwork.
  • Draft condition reports, installation guides and packing notes that are clear and easy to follow.
  • Generate a wide range of reports using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and The Museum System, or its equivalent.

Qualifications
Selective Placement Factor:
Ability to handle objects safely and efficiently, with an understanding of the materials that make up objects within a design museum collection and how these materials may react with installation or packing materials.
Experience:
GS-07: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined asinstallation/de-installation of art objects for exhibitions, independently handling art objects for exhibitions and loans, and preparing purchase orders, loan agreements and condition reports.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
Or Education: One full academic year of related graduate level education or superior academic achievement.

How You Will Be Evaluated
You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:
  1. Knowledge of museum registration methods and collections management practices.
  2. Knowledge of art handling to pack and unpack objects according to museum standards.
  3. Ability to perform administrative work, such as condition reports, installation guides and packing notes.
  4. Skill in using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) software and familiarity with using an automated museum collections management system.
