Job Title: Mortgage Underwriting Manager
Employee Status: Full-time salaried
Estimated Hours/Week: 38 hours per week
Remote: Remote, but prefer candidates live in Michigan for easy commute to Grand Rapids when needed.

About this position:
LMCU is looking for a Mortgage Underwriting Manager to manage a team of underwriters utilizing the approved Underwriting Standards set forth by FNMA/FHLMC/FHA/VA/RD/MSHDA. This role communicates and partners effectively with operations and sales staff to provide the best possible service.
What you'll do:
  • Acts as a subject matter expert for all LMCU offered products/services, portfolio programs. Maintains in-depth knowledge of agency and investor guidelines from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, RD, MSHDA including, but not limited to Condo Project guidelines and LMCU's Port Non-Warrantable Condo Program (NWC).
  • Communicates and partners with all departments from a member service standpoint to ensure overall mortgage member satisfaction scores exceeds an average of 93%+ monthly.
  • Leads and mentors an underwriting team. Provides guidance, training, and feedback and acts as an escalation point for team members, making prudent underwriting decisions on loan files.
  • Effectively partners with Sales, Processing, Closing Managers to assist with any questions or escalations as they arise ensuring all loans follow regulations and guidelines.
  • Assists with loan assignments and underwriting queue load balancing when needed.
  • Monitors loan volume and production on a daily and weekly basis.
  • Reviews and responds to any Quality loan defects that are cited to determine if accurate and mentors/coach underwriting team on any defect deficiencies.
  • Provides documentation in the file if a policy, procedure, or guideline exception is made stating the type of exception and compensating factors to support the decision.
  • Performs One on One's with UW team to review performance regarding production, quality, communication, partnership, LMCU Culture.
  • Reviews loans for second level reviews for declines and Mortgage loan amounts approvals over UW lending authority.

What You'll Bring:
  • Five or more years of experience in a Mortgage Underwriting role, including prior experience effectively leading a team.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of agency and investor guidelines from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, RD, and MSHDA.
  • Ability to analyze risk and make decisions on an exception basis to LMCU portfolio guidelines. Must be agile with the ability to consider compensating factors for approval
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate both with external members and internal partners.
