Job Description
MOHS Surgical Assistant
Job Title: MOHS Surgical Assistant
Grade: 27
Department: DERM-MOHS
Schedule: Mon-Thurs (7:30 am - 6 pm)
Supervisor/Reports To: Associate Director
Exempt or Non-Exempt (FLSA): Non-Exempt
Position Summary:
The Mohs Surgical Assistant is responsible for assisting the Mohs surgeon during procedures. The Surgical Assistant is responsible for the scheduling and pre-certification of Mohs surgical procedures. The Surgical Assistant also functions in the role of direct patient care including the taking of patient history, taking of vital signs, performing surgical dressing changes and assisting with suture removal. The surgical scheduler ensures that all information and consents are available before the patient's procedure. The surgical scheduler will perform all medical assistant duties to support patient care.
Essential Job functions:
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of booking and scheduling Mohs procedures
  • Functions as the assistant to the Mohs surgeon during procedures with clinical and documentation support
  • Prepares the patient prior to the procedure; obtains vital signs, reconciles medical and surgical history, review of medications and allergies. Documents appropriately in EMR.
  • Demonstrates understanding of submission of necessary documents for pre-certification of patient procedures
  • Provides post procedure care including surgical dressing changes and assisting with suture removal
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of insurance and pre-certification requirements
  • Directly schedules patients and manages the surgery schedule,
  • Performs Phlebotomy as directed.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge for rescheduling and canceling procedures
  • Demonstrates customer service skills when communicating with peers/other departments
  • Verbalizes customer services skills to alleviate patient anxiety
  • Logs surgical procedures as needed
  • Communicates problems to Nurse/Physician/Supervisor
  • Demonstrates good judgment in scheduling procedure to increase physician productivity
  • Employs appropriate and timely use of EMR tasks
  • Accurately completes any/all necessary forms for the patient
  • Answers phones and triages calls, takes accurate messages.
  • Performs various clerical duties including faxing, photocopying, scanning, filing and mailing's
  • Stocks and prepares exam rooms. Assists in ordering of supplies.
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures
  • Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed although not directly assigned

General Job functions:
  • Assist Physician during all procedures (including , but not limited to; MOHS, biopsies , incisions, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Job Requirements:
  • Physical mobility, which includes movement from place to place on the job, taking distance and speed into account.
  • Physical agility, which includes ability to maneuver body while in place.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers.
  • Endurance (e.g. continuous typing, prolonged standing/bending, walking).

Environmental Risks:
  • Allergens: dust, mold and/or pollen
  • Combative Patients / Visitors

Education, Certification, Computer and Training Requirements:
  • High School Graduate/GED / Equivalent Work, required. Vocational/Technical School, preferred.
  • 0-1 Years related work experience, required. 2-4 Years' experience, preferred.
  • Heart Saver within 90 days of hire, required
  • Medical Assistant certification required within 6 months of employment.
  • Phlebotomy certification, preferred.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, required
  • Good interpersonal skills, required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, preferred
  • Ability to perform diversified duties within time limitations with high degree of accuracy, preferred
  • Ability to organize, problem solve, critical think and set priorities, preferred
  • Basic proficiency in computer use, required
  • Standard Office Equipment (Phone, Fax, Copy Machine, Scanner, Email/Voice Mail)
  • Standard Office Technology in a Window based environment
  • EHR, Practice Management System and Departmental/Ancillary Systems

Travel:
  • Travel to satellite locations for meetings
