We are seeking a graduate student within a Master’s level education program (MFT or Counseling Psychology) to provide Mental Health and wellness-based intervention services to children and families at school sites in the Novato Unified School district Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. This placement takes place from January 2024 to June 2024.

This is an unpaid internship but trainees do receive a stipend of $1,000/semester.

Essential Functions:

Under expert clinical supervision and with consistent training and support, you will have the opportunity to provide a diverse array of services, including:

Clinical Interventions and Services

  1. Provides brief interventions, as well as scheduled individual and family therapy, both at assigned school site(s) and at the agency, as appropriate;
  2. Provides group therapy and targeted/thematic groups as appropriate (i.e. CBITS or Bounce Back groups, gender-based groups, social skills and life skills groups, mindful mood/DBT groups, art therapy groups, and more);
  3. Provides crisis intervention and follow-up as needed in coordination with clinical supervisor, including conducting risk assessments, developing care and safety plans, calling mobile crisis support and/or local law enforcement, if needed;
  4. Consults with principal, schoolteacher, school psychologist, and others to provide continuity of services between Mental Health and educational resources and objectives.

Clinical Case Management

  1. Assesses needs, locates and arranges for appropriate referrals of clients as needed;
  2. Participates in Student Study Team (SST) meetings, Individual Education Plans (IEP), as well as other school meetings as needed;
  3. Collaborates and maintains collateral contacts with school and community resources, including school resource officers, county, court, and probation officers, in addition to parents and significant others.

Training Opportunities and Supervision

  1. Attends weekly training on a variety of topics ranging from motivational interviewing, clinical documentation, risk assessment, and more!
  2. Participates in individual and group supervision;
  3. Promotes team-building and problem-solving;
  4. Participates in staff and team meetings, organization-wide trainings and in-service meetings.

Documentation

  1. Conducts thorough psychosocial assessments and screenings;
  2. Prepares initial and on-going treatment/care plans;
  3. Monitors treatment plan implementation and revision of treatment goals and interventions;
  4. Ensures that all paperwork and charting requirements, as well as reports are completed and submitted timely, as described within the NMCS Mental Health Program Manual and as assigned by the manager, Clinical Supervisor and/or Director of Wellness Programs.
  5. Supports integrity of service contracts by monitoring eligibility requirements, as necessary

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • English fluency
  • NMCS Mental Health and Wellness Trainee team members are required to practice within their scope of work and in alignment with the tenets of professional ethics of social workers, psychologists and marriage and family therapists, as well as with the ability to demonstrate personal integrity, clinical insight, competency, and maturity of judgment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and effectively with other professionals
  • Ability to work in a community and agency structure
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive practices and familiarity with multi-cultural populations, especially Latine, Asian and African-American communities
  • In progress Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in social work, marriage and family therapy, or in a closely related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual (Spanish)/bicultural

Conditions of Hire:

  • Fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless granted a medical or religious exemption.
  • Pre-employment health exam including proof of vaccinations and TB test clearance.
  • Criminal record clearance or exemption from California Department of Social Services. All convictions other than minor traffic violations require an exemption, including convictions that have been expunged.
