Duties and Responsibilities
- Position is responsible for providing technical services for maintaining the operations of the Hokulani Imaginarium (an 84-seat planetarium); the Imaginarium's production facilities; and other facilities managed by the Center for Aerospace Education.
- Maintains, operates and repairs specialized planetarium equipment, theatrical equipment, seating and lighting.
- Maintains and repairs computer and other supporting electronic equipment under the Center for Aerospace Education (including telescopes and supporting astronomical equipment).
- Operates, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs specialized Imaginarium projection system including regular maintenance checks of, including, but not limited to: (1) ultra-high definition fulldome projection system; (2) network of Windows servers, including high-performance graphic renderers using nVidia Quadro RTX technology; (3) peripheral planetarium equipment including lighting and analog special effects; (4) proprietary control system for remote-control of video, audio and lighting systems; and (5) digital show production workstation and server.
- Maintains Imaginarium audio amplifier and speaker systems.
- Maintains specialized theater lighting and interactive control systems.
- Maintains 40-foot interior dome surfaces. (May require climbing a ladder or using a scaffold to reach 30-foot height of interior dome.)
- Installs software programs related to show presentations and interactive control systems. Assists with in-house show productions.
- Maintains records, inventory, and provides standard documentation and references for all projection and supporting equipment of the Imaginarium.
- Maintains and updates the Center for Aerospace Education's website.
- Assists with the operation of planetarium shows and at the Imaginarium's box office.
- Assists subcontractors with installation and repair work.
- Work may require evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Possession of a vocational degree in computer science, electronics, electronics technology or related field; and two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for the construction, modification, and maintenance of electrical and electronic circuits and equipment at the journey worker level; or equivalent education/training or experience.
- Demonstrated ability to operate, troubleshoot, and repair hardware and software of Windows computers and Windows networks.
- Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the construction and repair of electrical and electronic circuits and equipment as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
- Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with occupational hazards and proper safety precautions.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
- Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
- Experience configuring and maintaining a network of Windows computers (7 and 10), especially network-attached storage, file sharing, remote desktop.
- Knowledge in the principles of lensed or mirrored optical systems.
- Knowledge in digital imaging and display systems.
- Knowledge of the principles of electronics or electrical systems.
- Knowledge of the operation and uses of standard testing equipment to include, but not limited to: volt/ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and power supplies.
- Ability to read and interpret system diagrams, technical manuals, and basic engineering schematics.
- Skill in the use of standard electronics shop tools and instruments.
- Ability to work in confined and dimly lit spaces, climb heights reaching 30 feet, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work a variable schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Experience in configuration of professional video display systems; including projector alignment, color balancing, image blending, and video synchronization.
- Experience with digital audio management, including, but not limited to Dante and BSS, or other digital sound processors.
- Familiarity with audio and video file formats, encoding/decoding, and containers (e.g. mpeg, h.264, wav, ac3, etc.).
- Experience in set up or upkeep of RAID storage arrays.
- Familiarity or experience with DMX lighting setup and operation.
- Familiarity with Windows scripting languages and task automation (e.g. batch or powershell).
- Knowledge of fundamental building electrical systems, calculating load on a circuit, inspection and testing of UPS battery backup systems, ability to work safely around large opto-mechanical equipment.
- Experience in managing HTML web pages via FTP (sometimes including CSS and Javascript)
- Experience using motorized or computer-guided telescopes, especially alignment and maintenance.
- Experience using Ubuntu/Debian Linux, in order to interact with computers running dedicated tasks.
- Experience using DOS 6.0, in order to collect and interact with NOAA weather satellite data.
- Knowledge or experience in RF signal processing (e.g. HAM radio or radio astronomy).
- Ability to work as part of an existing team.
- Three (3) years related work experience to include, but not limited to: the repair and maintenance of audio amplification systems, video projection systems, and Window-based PCs and Macintosh computer systems; website maintenance; computer networks; as well as experience with computer graphics and animation.
- Public speaking skills and ability to communicate with large groups and audiences of all ages.
- High level of organizational, self-motivation, and self-direction aptitude.
