Position Description
Our Structural & Mechanical Design team is a high performing group executing challenging tasks for dynamic analysis of the Space Launch System (SLS) including the Systems and Integration (SA&I) functions. This exciting work will serve as a critical step in sending humans to the Moon, Mars and beyond!
We are searching for an engineer to provide Mechanical Design support for the SLS vehicle development. Working independently and in an integrated, collaborative team, your responsibilities would be to:

  • Supply design support for the SLS project and SLS Vehicle integration for Block1, Block 1B and Block 2 by develop integrated design products associated with the SLS including Computer Aided Design (CAD) Outer Mold Line (OML), models required for Interface Control Documents (ICDs), envelope models and procurement control models and drawings for Block1 and Block 2 Vehicles.
  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments.
  • Plan and conduct work using engineering judgement and expertise.
  • Represent the organization in technical meetings and conferences with the guidance/assistance of fellow engineers or technicians.
  • Reviewing requirements, operations, plans, and other documentation. 
  • Supporting studies and investigations of concepts.
  • Provided integration support for configuration management of project documents and review of contractor documents and engineering change notices. Integration support includes coordinating with systems engineering, project, and prime contractor as required.

A degree in engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred. Typically, the educational requirement is a BS with 0 - 5 years of experience.

Skills and experience should demonstrate:

  • Proficiency in CAD:  3-D modeling, drawings, lightweight viewable. Preferably Creo.
  • Proficiency in GD&T ASME 1994 or later.
  • Proficiency in Drawing development, including drafting and release, including skill in the development of product definition using 3D CAD models, drawings, notes, and parts lists is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • A proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite competence (Word, Office, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook) is required.
  • Exposure to structural interface drawings, design documentation and requirements reviews.
  • Knowledge of structural design methods, test philosophy and methodology, material behavior, fabrication methods.
  • Capability of participating on a multi-disciplinary team of engineers with expertise in thermal design and analysis, materials (metallic and non-metallic), aero-sciences, manufacturing and producibility, and structural test equipment and test hardware.
  • Capability of working with other areas including propulsion systems, reaction control systems, engine systems and avionics, quality control, ground support system, safety and mission assurance and reliability and system engineering and integration.
  • Preference for skill in structural design, in particular launch vehicle and space craft structures.
  • Preference for skill in use of Windchill product data management tool.

Essential Functions
Work Environment: 
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines: 
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance: 
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
