This position will provide Systems Engineering and Design Support to the System Analysis Branch (EV74) and the Human Systems Integration and Engineering Team in support of the Space Launch System (SLS) Program, and other flight and habitat programs. The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and systems/tasks supportability processes and assessments.
The candidate will provide and perform the following task:
- Assist in the design and construction of engineering mockup hardware using various materials.
- Meet with customers to review the requirements for the mockup.
- Determine the fidelity of the mockup based upon the customer's needs and requirements.
- Convert design drawings (CAD files) into construction/fabrication drawings.
- Procure the necessary materials and components for the mockup.
- Work with technicians to manufacture and assemble the mockup.
- Participate in systems/tasks supportability assessments.
A Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering or a degree in a related technical discipline such as Industrial Design, Physics or Mathematics. Typical educational requirements are the equivalent of a Bachelor's of Science with 2 years of relevant experience or a Masters of Science.
The candidate is required to have:
- Familiarity with different CAD packages (SolidWorks, Pro-Engineer Creo, Microstation, or Unigraphics).
- Experience in woodworking and basic hand tool proficiency.
- Experience with CNC fabrication, milling, and machine shop operations.
- Some knowledge of design and construction techniques.
- Ability to break problems or issues into manageable pieces to facilitate resolution of technical concerns.
Critical thinking, effective communications, and good problem solving skills.
Personnel are required to be self-motivated, team players willing to work in dynamic work environments.
Comfortable with technical writing and presentation skills.
Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
Desired skills include (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as discriminating factors in selecting applicants):
- An understanding of the NASA systems engineering processes.
- Experience with 3D printing
- Experience with human factors standards (NASA, FAA or MIL).
