Hook Arts Media Seeks a Marketing and Communications Manager
Founded in 1994, Hook Arts Media is a vibrant community-based, multi-disciplinary arts organization located on the beautiful Red Hook, Brooklyn waterfront. HAM currently runs year-round arts education programs at high-needs public high schools as well as onsite and offsite after-school and community programs for ages 12-24, serving upwards of 700 students annually. In addition, HAM produces the annual Red Hook Fest each June – a free outdoor performing arts festival that features world-class artists as well as performances by over 100 local youth – and pop-up performances in support of community initiatives.

HAM is seeking a Marketing and Communications Manager to join our team. This is a part-time, hybrid three-days/week position with at least one day per week in person at HAM’s office in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Additional nights and weekend hours are required for events. The Marketing and Communications Manager will work closely with the Executive Director, Education Director, and Director of Media Programs as well as other staff. The Marketing and Communications Manager will design, implement, measure, and optimize marketing strategies that increase the organization’s public profile. They will also manage individual giving campaigns and some corporate giving in collaboration with the General Manager and Executive Director.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Research, compose, and execute annual and campaign marketing plans
- Evaluate, measure, and optimize department performance with annual, quarterly, and campaign marketing reports
- Develop communications materials that faithfully represent the organization’s brand, mission, and values
- Cultivate media, community, and funder contacts
- Distribute press releases and cultivate PR
- Update and maintain database
- Update and maintain media server
- Update and maintain website
- Onboard and manage consultants, as needed
- Coordinate and manage cross-promotional opportunities with community partners, corporate sponsors, and other stakeholders, as needed
- Coordinate and manage program documentation
- Provide collateral for grants and grant reports
- Liaison with IT consultants as needed
Additional responsibilities include:
- Individual + Corporate Giving
- Design, implement, measure, and optimize strategies to increase individual giving and corporate giving
- Plan and execute the Major Giving Campaign
- Plan and execute the annual individual giving campaign
- Research and cultivate individual and corporate donors
- Provide documents as needed for grant reporting: images/video, marketing reports, graphic design
- Graphic and Website Design
- Design brand-aligned content for communications content, including social media, emails, community engagement materials, and more
- Update the website regularly
- Design flyers, posters, and other print and digital collateral
- Special Projects
- In addition to promoting Hook Arts Media’s education programs, Marketing will promote various special events, including Red Hook Fest, film screenings, community events, cultivation events, and events at our partner schools. Marketing is expected to attend Red Hook Fest, most film screenings, and cultivation events.
- Additional administrative duties, as needed
Qualifications
Viable candidates will share HAM’s values pertaining to antiracist principles and possess knowledge of equity-centered work practices. They will have extensive experience with Apple Computers, the Google Drive Suite, including Google Docs and Google Sheets as well as Adobe Photoshop, WordPress, and Microsoft Office.
Candidates must possess the following qualifications:
o Excellent written, verbal, and quantitative communicator
o Proven track record implementing successful marketing campaigns for arts organizations, artists, nonprofits, community initiatives, and/or political initiatives
o Demonstrated capacity to work self-directed and in groups
o Demonstrated aptitude to represent an initiative faithfully according to its branding, mission, and values
The following are highly desirable but not required:
o Previous development experience
o Knowledge of the arts education sector
o Previous experience with Airtable, including formulas, extensions, interfaces, and automations
o Previous experience with wealth screening software
o Multilingual, especially Spanish
Strong preference for candidates with at least 5 years’ experience in nonprofit Marketing within the NYC cultural sector.
Education: BA or equivalent
Must be based in NYC
Pay is commensurate with experience. Salary range is $40,000 to $45,000. One week in August and the week between Christmas and New Year off. Accrued other PTO and sick pay. Health benefits can be negotiated.
