Job Description
Mission Technologies, a division of HII, is seeking a Marine Electrician for their Advanced Modeling and Simulation Technical Operations (AMSTO) located in San Diego, CA.
You will be responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment on various types of ships and vessels. You will work closely with other members of the ship's crew, including engineers, technicians, and deck officers, to ensure that all electrical systems are functioning properly and safely. You will be subject to submit to and pass alcohol/drug tests as mandated by the United States Coast Guard including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident/incident testing.

What Your Day Will Look Like

  • Perform daily inspections and maintainence on electrical equipment
  • Maintain, troubleshoot and repair all power generation and distribution equipment, i.e. generators and engine controls, SCRs, switchgears, transformers, etc.
  • Assist with the maintenance and repair of general vessel equipment such as HVAC system, refrigeration plants, communication systems, lighting, etc.
  • Carry out maintenance and repair on electrical components of marine equipment, i.e. thruster motors and auxiliaries, control panels, cranes, etc.
  • Install new equipment as required, with regards to electrical wiring, fixtures and junction boxes
  • Assist in performing and interpreting power calculations, power factor, insulation tests, and positive relay tests as required
  • Assist with development of systems for large Unmanned Surface Vessels
  • Study and understand electrical schematics as required
  • Maintain an adequate supply of shares to fulfill maintenance requirements; inform government POC where there is need to reorder
  • Inform government of any technical problems or limitations that may affect the safe operation of the vessel
  • Ensure that reports for repair and maintenance of equipment are accurate and complete
  • Assist in supplying information for maintenance and repair budget
  • Communicate equipment problems or breakdown information
  • Ensure all aspects of safety during task execution
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on all electrical systems on board vessels

You Must Have
  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience. Marine experience required with background in electronics troubleshooting, electronics system maintanence and vessel electrical maintenance
  • An active US Secret level security clearance
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand schematics, drawings, as well as implement program directives, safety regulations, and local area instructions
  • Demonstrate knowlege of electrical safety
  • Proven track record of working successfully in a team environment
  • Willingness to travel 11-25% of the time, including underway at sea

Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • Formal training as an electrician (Technical school, Military, and Maritime qualications will be strongly considered)
  • Familiarity with PLC controls

Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
