Summary:

As the nation’s oldest and biggest animal welfare organization, the ASPCA’s mission is to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals. The ASPCA Philanthropy team is looking to fill a new position that will play a critical role in securing the resources necessary to achieve this mission.

The Manager, Philanthropy Communications supports the stewardship of important donor relationships for the ASPCA. This position is responsible for developing communications for donors giving at a level of $5,000+ annually, which allow the frontline fundraisers to effectively communicate the organization’s programmatic initiatives and impact. A proven writer with strong visual-spatial skills, the Manager will craft engaging, visually interesting emails, newsletters, donor reports, appeals, and other materials to keep the organization’s biggest supporters informed and invested in our mission. Key to this role, is the ability to synthesize large amounts of information and repackage content in digestible, compelling formats that succinctly tell our story. In addition to communications, the person in this role will manage the organization’s donor recognition menu for Philanthropy donors and oversee departmental administrative tasks. To be effective in this position, the Manager must be an excellent communicator and team player and employ a growth mindset.

This remote-based position (which requires travel, as described below) is open to all candidates based within the United States. Preference will be given to candidates based in the New York City or Los Angeles areas, given proximity to ASPCA programming. Office space and hybrid work arrangements are available to employees within community distance of New York City.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Donor Communications (70%)

  • Develop the Philanthropy department's communications strategy and professional, compelling donor stewardship materials for use by the entire Philanthropy team, in email and mail formats, including but not limited to quarterly newsletters, breaking news, donor surveys, reports, appeals, and invitations
  • Utilize software programs to produce professional, engaging content that includes descriptive writing, infographics, and pictures; coordinate with freelance graphic designer as needed
  • Manage the team’s annual communications calendar, ensuring all deadlines are met
  • Lead the organization and execution of all departmental donor mailings, via the team’s mail house vendor
  • Create and execute all departmental mass emails, via an email marketing system
  • Develop email strategy using email engagement analytics, and provide reports to team
  • Research and analyze state laws impacting non-profits (I.e. privacy laws, Donor Advised Fund giving, etc.) and philanthropic trends, reporting timely information in our communications to donors, when appropriate,and making recommendations to Philanthropy leadership team to incorporate into strategy
  • Collaborate across departments to collect and organize compelling content, including statistics, program details, and stories.
  • Set standards for Philanthropy communications, in line with organizational branding
  • Update the department’s cadre of one-pagers summarizing ASPCA programs and state-level impact for proposals and individual donor meetings aligned to donor interests
  • Collaborate with the Foundations team to create donor proposals and reports
  • Lead the development process for the department’s year-end and mid-year reports for Philanthropy donors
  • Develop, categorize, and track new story content and pitch documents for use by the team
  • Lead the department’s acknowledgement letter process, customizing and sharing the new acknowledgement and following up to ensure accurate implementation

Donor Recognition and Relationships (15%)

  • Work with Director of Philanthropy to strategize about new donor recognition opportunities and lead implementation of new strategies
  • Lead milestone communications, track lifetime giving and ensure steady stream of special occasion and milestone communications
  • Lead the design and facilitate the creation of donor stewardship items, including photo albums, plaques, videos, etc.
  • Lead the fabrication of donor signs for facilities, via vendor, and collaborate with philanthropy officers to verify and maintain internal records
  • Create materials detailing naming opportunities for donors
  • Communicate with donors and prospects on occasion through phone calls and correspondence

Administrative & Other Duties (15%)

  • Manage specific departmental administrative duties including: vendor research and contracts, team events, the team’s digital filing system, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Travel expected to require up to 10% of the Manager’s time.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Must be extremely detail-oriented
  • Familiar and comfortable with digital platforms and learning design software
  • Ability to self-prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously

Compensation and Benefits:

The applicable target hiring range for this remote role is based on where the employee works, which for remote roles is the employee’s primary location of residence, and its respective cost of labor. We have organized the U.S. varying costs of labor index into three geographic zones. As a point of reference, below, we have included our ASPCA locations by geographic zone to illustrate what the hiring range would be in each of the following areas.

Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary ranges for this role are set forth below and may be modified in the future.

  • Zone 1 (For example, Asheville, NC; Champaign, IL; Columbus, OH; Gainesville, FL; Miami, FL; Oklahoma City, OK; Overland, KS; Union, MO; Weaverville, NC): $59,000 - $64,0000 annually

  • Zone 2 (For example, Washington D.C.; Los Angeles, CA): $65,000 - $70,000 annually

  • Zone 3 (For example, New York, NY): $72,000 - $78,000 annually
