Job Description
BookOps is the shared library services collaboration of New York Public Library (NYPL) and Brooklyn Public Library (BPL). BookOps coordinates the selection, acquisition, cataloging, processing, and distribution of library materials for its member libraries.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
- In-depth understanding of library metadata and cataloging standards
- BookOps catalogers best practices in cataloging
- How to model, analyze and optimize cataloging workflows as they intersect with Selection, Acquisition and Processing Departments
- Efficiency in cataloging workflows and quality of bibliographic and authority data in the catalog
- Become familiar with the range of cataloging systems, tools, and workflows utilized in the Cataloging Department
- Learn in-depth about circulating collections classification and local cataloging policies
- Get introduced to BookOps team and stakeholders in other departments
- Contribute to local cataloging policies documentation
- Directly oversee and prioritize cataloging of the NYPL and BPL circulating materials
- Establish close relationships with the Selection, Acquisition and Processing Departments to guide handling of the cataloging workload
- Participate in planning and organizing a comprehensive cataloging training program for staff
- Evaluate existing cataloging workflows and advise how to improve them
- Mentor cataloging staff in application of cataloging standards and local policies
Responsibilities
- Supervises and assigns work to a team of catalogers
- Plan, organize, and evaluate Cataloging Department workflows in coordination with the department management team to maximize cataloging efficiency and responsiveness to the needs of other library departments and users
- Develops and maintains local practices cataloging documentation
- Trains cataloging staff in standards and use of OCLC bibliographic utility and Sierra ILS
- Attend meetings within the library organization as needed, and interact with vendors as appropriate
- Approve schedules and hours of direct reports; provide coverage as needed in the absence of other department managers
Required Education, Experience & Skills
- ALA accredited Master’s degree (MLS, MLIS) in Library and Information Studies
- Public Librarian’s professional certificate issued by the State of New York (can be obtained at time of employment)
- Five or more years of experience creating original cataloging metadata/bibliographic records in a library environment
- At least three years of supervisory experience of a larger team
- Proficiency in MARC21 standard for bibliographic and authority data
- Proficiency in RDA guidelines for records in print and non-print formats
- Understanding of authority records; experience with PCC and NACO preferred
- Proficiency in Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Subject Headings
- Experience with the ILS, OCLC Connexion client, and MarcEdit
- Strong organizational and planning skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in working tactfully with other library staff in a team setting
- Critical judgment skills in cataloging responsibilities
- Knowledge and awareness of emerging trends in cataloging and metadata
- Proficient in reading and writing in one or more non-English languages preferred
- Familiarity with Google Workspace
- Directs and supervises a team consisting of librarians and collection processing staff
- Participates in the recruitment, interviewing and selection process of candidates in vacant positions in the Cataloging Department
