The City of Carpinteria is seeking college, university, or graduate students to join our team as a paid Intern. Assignments are part-time at-will and limited to an average of 20 hours or less per week. As an Intern, you will provide support and assistance to an assigned City Department by performing assignments ranging from routine administrative tasks to more complex and varied professional, confidential, and specialized assignments.
Current assignments are available in the following departments: Administrative Services, Community Development, General Government, and Parks, Recreation, and Community Services. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies and establish an eligibility list for future needs in all departments. Apply immediately to be considered for current vacancies.

To qualify, you must be at least 18 years old and currently enrolled in an accredited college or university working towards a degree, or recently graduated and obtained a degree within two years of application. If currently enrolled, must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Preference given to individuals pursuing a degree in a related field or specific area of interest as demonstrated by completed coursework.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
INTERN ASSIGNMENTS
Applicants must indicate their area of interest. Assignments will be filled depending on the needs of the departments.
Administrative Services: Finance: Will assist with various accounting duties in the preparation and maintenance of financial records and reports, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, business licenses, and payroll; performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibilities; and perform related duties as assigned. Preferred coursework in Accounting or Finance.
Community Development: Will provide office and technical support for Planning and Building and Safety. May assist with various administrative support duties, including assistance at the public counter, responding to public inquiries, filing, data entry, and archival management and scanning. Assistance with various technology platforms and databases. Assistance with research, data gathering, and analysis for special projects, annual reports, and other duties in support of the department.
General Government: Human Resources: Will assist with various administrative duties providing support to the General Government Department, including the City Manager's Office, City Clerk's Office, and/or Human Resources/Risk Management Office. Duties may include, but are not limited to, policy research, file management, event support, flyer creation, open enrollment assistance, benefit studies, and workers' compensation administration. Preferred coursework in Business Administration, Public Policy, or Industrial or Organizational Psychology.
Parks, Recreation, and Community Services: Will assist with various duties providing support to the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department, including the Carpinteria Community Pool, Carpinteria Community Library, and various City parks and facilities. Duties may include, but are not limited to parks and facilities inspections, policy research, market studies, flyer creation, program registration, facility rentals, file management, and event support. Preferred coursework in Environmental Studies, Library Science, Recreation Management, or another related field.
Public Works: Will provide office and field support to the Public Works Department divisions: Engineering, Street Maintenance, and Sustainability and Environment. May assist with various administrative support duties, including assistance at the public counter, responding to public inquiries, filing, data entry, and archival management and scanning. Assistance with various technology platforms and databases. Assistance with research, data gathering, and analysis for special projects, annual reports, and other duties in support of the department. Perform a wide variety of tasks depending on assignment which may encompass technical support, administrative responsibilities, or field work.
Essential Functions and Basic Duties for All Departments:
  • Perform a variety of general administrative duties including writing reports and correspondence; maintaining files, records, and supplies; retrieval and re-filing of records.
  • Proofread a variety of documents, verifying accuracy, researching discrepancies, and recording information.
  • Research, process, and prepare reports and council agenda items.
  • Correspond with City departments, community groups, and citizens.
  • Assist with and prepare for events, committee meetings, and special projects.
  • Assist in preparing presentation materials
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college, university or graduate program.
  • Verification of school enrollment including college 2.5 GPA (copies of official transcript will be required)
  • Preferred completion of one (1) year of college level coursework in area of assignment.

License/Certificate:
  • A valid appropriate California driver's license may be required.
  • Must maintain a satisfactory driver record.
Knowledge of:
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as applicable.
  • Principles and practices of office management.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher); desktop publishing, and graphic design programs may be desirable for some assignments.
Ability to:
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.
  • Learn procedures, processes, and forms related to assigned area.
  • Perform procedures in an organized and accurate manner.
  • Understand, follow, and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Develop favorable public relations and maintain an appearance that projects a positive image.
  • Think clearly, quickly, and accurately in emergencies.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Type at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting software applications.
  • Work evening and weekend hours as needed.

The City does not participate in Social Security; in lieu of social security, part-time employees, not currently CalPERS members, are enrolled in the City's 457 Deferred Compensation retirement plan.
