The Park Maintenance Worker positions perform a variety of routine and deferred maintenance for various Parks & Recreation facilities.
Job Status: Seasonal Full-time (9.25 months, typically early March - Mid December, variable); Teamsters Local #2 Union affiliationThe Union is in the process of approving a new contract with higher wages. These higher wages will likely be in effect prior to these positions being hired and will apply to the successful applicants.

This position will work 9.25 months of the year and will be placed on layoff, then recalled for the next season (no need to reapply when recalled, just asked to come back to work)
- Provide landscape maintenance for Park & Recreation grounds, lands, and facilities, using various methods and tools, including hand and small power tools, chainsaws, trimmers, edging tools, blowers, mowers, etc.
- Maintain turf grass by seeding, fertilizing, aerating, top dressing, watering, and mowing.
- Provide janitorial services throughout Park & Recreation facilities, grounds, etc., including cleaning restrooms, picnic shelters, buildings, storage areas, and picking up litter/garbage.
- Perform a variety of minor routine maintenance and repairs throughout Park & Recreation facilities, pools, splash decks, athletic fields, dugouts, and courts. including park fixtures, painting, marking layouts for various athletic events, removing/repairing vandalism damage, and identifying/repairing safety hazards.
- Coordinate daily tasks and projects with Park Attendants, volunteers, and other partners.
- Provide support to special events and various programs by preparing fields, courts, and equipment set up/tear down according to competitive standards and codes.
- Maintain shrubs, annuals, perennials, and ornamental grasses through propagation, watering, weeding, and fertilizing.
- Perform routine cleaning, maintenance and inventory of parts, equipment, and vehicles.
- Operate various construction equipment and vehicles, including tractors, skid steer loaders, front end loaders, utility trucks, and flatbed/dump trucks.
- Complete reports and track resources and assignments in computer-based systems.
- Maintain asphalt and gravel trails and pathways by mowing, weeding, sweeping, garbage removal, etc.
- Assist with various construction, conservation lands, recreation facility and arborist projects.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of construction and maintenance projects, including recordkeeping, inventories, techniques, operation procedures for vehicles and equipment, and working in the right-of-way and medians.
- Knowledge of turf, trees, shrubs, flowers, trails, native soils, and general landscaping maintenance procedures, including automatic underground irrigation installation, repair, and controller programming.
- Knowledge of and ability to promote safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA/MUTCD standards and guidelines related to park maintenance and construction.
- Knowledge of various trade work, including plumbing, carpentry, electrical, welding and/or concrete.
- Skill in following oral and written instructions, while working independently with minimum supervision.
- Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365 and the ability to learn job specific applications and equipment.
- Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
- Ability to operate vehicles, small power equipment, hand tools, and light equipment in a safe and effective manner; moderate to heavy equipment (9.25-month duration)
- Ability to identify and implement risk management techniques to reduce exposure to injury, damage, and liability.
- Ability to read, comprehend and write incident reports and other operation reports and documentation.
- Ability to learn City and departmental policies, procedures, and practices.
- Ability to learn the operating and maintenance procedures for parks, sports fields, swimming pools and other recreational facilities.
Working Conditions:
- Position requires the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. or less.
- Duties are frequently performed under conditions where noise, heat, dampness or cold are unavoidable.
- Work environment may involve occasional exposure to unavoidable seasonal weather conditions, occupational hazards, biohazards, blood borne pathogens, sharps, herbicides, and physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Any combination of training and experience equivalent to one (1) year of maintenance, light equipment experience, or another relevant field.
- Must have a valid Montana driver's license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
