Job Description
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Maintenance Specialist, Bldg/Facility/Const, Journey 1 located in Palmer!
What you will be doing:
The essential purpose of the position is overall maintenance and repair of the maintenance shop facility, located in Palmer, and associated buildings, grounds, equipment, mechanical and electrical systems and to provide service to boats, motors, vehicles, and specialized project equipment to ensure fishery monitoring and research programs are conducted without interruption.
Under the direct supervision of the Area Management Biologist, the incumbent of this position performs preventative and corrective maintenance of the shop facility located in Palmer as well as assigned new construction projects, and is available to design, fabricate, maintain and repair equipment to meet fishery management and research program goals in the Northern Cook Inlet Management Area.
Our organization, mission and culture:
This position provides maintenance on boats, motors, and the construction and maintenance of specialized field equipment vital to the success of fisheries research and management projects being conducted to ensure sustainable uses of fish resources in the Northern Cook Inlet Management Area.
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and wellbeing are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.
The benefits of joining our team:
This position works independently troubleshooting mechanical issues and welding/repairing boats and motors, which is certain to provide a sense of self-gratification in work well done as well as connecting with and creating a network with local vendors and other professional maintenance shops for support. The incumbent works directly with biologists in their pursuit of accomplishing field projects that are reliant on transportation (most often boats), specialized equipment (e.g. fish wheels, fish weirs), and in doing so will become part of the Palmer Fish and Game team, playing a unique role as the sole maintenance personnel. There will be opportunities to train biologists and field technicians in preventative maintenance of boats and equipment, travel to remote locations by boat or airplane to maintain/upkeep remote cabins, don waders to assist with the installation of fish weirs and other project equipment, and travel by boat to field sites to tow out boats or fix boats on site. This is a diverse position involving approximately 90% of time spent in the shop and 10% of the time in the field. This is an opportunity to work under the influence of a supervisor, but also direct your own daily work schedule to meet the needs of various fisheries projects in an ever changing, dynamic work atmosphere. One day may be changing out the main bearing on a jet unit or welding a hole in a boat and the next day test running an airboat up to Knik Glacier after a fix. The next day might involve welding up a video camera chute to be installed in a fish weir and the following day spent helping to install that chute in a river and seeing it work. This is an opportunity to build a maintenance career in support of very important fisheries related work, a role no other Fish and Game staff person can provide in our office. This is an important job and a person who is successful in this position will be considered as highly valued by Palmer Fish and Game staff and the state of Alaska.
The working environment you can expect:
This position is located in Palmer, AK. This position's office is located at a maintenance shop/yard which is separate from and a short drive from the main Fish and Game office located across from the Alaska State Fair grounds. The incumbent communicates with a supervisor on a daily basis or as needed after getting used to the job, comes by the main office as needed to collaborate with project biologists and the supervisor, but otherwise reports daily to the maintenance shop each day to set their own work schedule most often according to triaging and prioritizing immediate repairs vs. those that can wait, those requested by biologists, or as directed by their supervisor.
Who we are looking for:
Our ideal candidate will possess knowledge and experience in the following areas:
  • Diagnosing and making repairs to boats/motors ranging from small aluminum hulls outfitted with 40 - 175 horse jet driven outboards to airboats to inboard jet boats, ideally making repairs at our shop and otherwise recognizing when outsourcing repairs is necessary.
  • Ability to precisely cut and modify metals, weld aluminum and steel using MIG and TIG, design/fabricate specialized fisheries related equipment that often involves blueprint like specifications and other times involves a conceptual design by a biologist that relies on the maintenance specialist, in collaboration with the biologist, to invent and produce the product.
  • Experience setting own work schedule to be the most productive to the mission of an organization, such as Fish and Game. Ability to be self-driven toward accomplishing goals.
  • Experience with operation of equipment such as forklifts, power tools, welders, oxyacetylene torches, carpentry, electronics, and plumbing.
  • Experience with facility maintenance, such as maintaining a boiler heating system, dealing with occasional frozen pipes, security cameras, and plowing the shop yard during winter.

Special Note:
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
  • Requires possession of, or access to, firearms/ammunition.
  • Occasionally lifts equipment the weighs up to 50 pounds.
  • The incumbent uses a personal computer on a daily basis and must have general knowledge of and ability to use MS Office (word, excel, Outlook) and complete a timesheet on a biweekly basis.
  • Occasional travel to the field with other staff or solo and may be exposed to cold inclement weather and sleeping in tents in remote locations.
