What You’ll Do:

  • Opens incoming mail and physically inspects contents for contraband (e.g., illegal substance, written content which indicates actions or behavior that might be a threat to the facility, incarcerated persons, employees, or community)
  • Reviews incarcerated person correspondence
  • Follows security procedures for confiscation of contraband and notification of appropriate personnel for investigation or action
  • Prepares mail received for scanning letters, cards, and pictures
  • Scans mail ensuring quality of communication to incarcerated population’s electronic devices
  • Files processed mail in storage based on agency protocol and follows guidelines for future management of received mail
  • Follows all safety protocols such as the use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in the handling of all mail and the use of safety equipment such as the ductless fume hood systems
  • Ensures data entry which includes e-mail communications, report creation, routing, tracking other actions as directed
  • Loads and unloads trucks and/or distributes contents to various offices
  • Inventories and/or distributes supplies
  • Labels, folds and/or staples materials; photocopies and/or materials
  • Delivers and/or picks up mail, documents, packages and materials
  • Makes service calls and/or assists in repair and/or maintenance of machines
  • Answers inquiries from other employees, incarcerated persons and general public regarding U.S. Postal regulations or other postal options
  • Tracks forwarded, lost or misdirected mail or scans
  • Attends meetings and training as required

Qualifications

Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication, division & reading common English vocabulary; valid driver's license if position requires operation of vehicle to pick up or deliver mail.
