FunctionResponsible for handling and processing mail and may assist with some routine clerical duties.Examples of Work* Delivers and picks up mail from the Post Office, City Hall, etc.* Delivers bank deposits on a daily basis.* Processes the mail to include opening, sorting and distributing and prepare mail for mailing.* Receives phone calls, determines the nature of business, answers general information questions and refers individuals to the appropriate staff member.* Assists with a variety of clerical procedures such as data entry, sorting, indexing and filing.* Performs other related duties as required.QualificationsGraduation from high school or successful completion of the GED.A minimum of one (1) year of clerical work is preferred. Requires basic keyboarding skills and knowledge of personal computers and their functions. Ability to: function in a routine office environment; to follow oral and written instructions; to receive and convey information; to interact effectively with others.Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and must have a satisfactory driver's transcript based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
Must successfully pass testing for controlled substances and a criminal background check related to this position. Must be eligible to be bonded. Any acceptable combination of education and experience that qualifies an applicant may be considered.FeaturesReceives direction and daily work assignments from a Chief Deputy or designee.
Requires the ability to lift and handle heavy boxes and equipment up to 30 pounds. Must be able to interact with the public in a courteous manner. May require limited use of personal vehicle.
