Legal Action of Wisconsin, Inc. (LAW) is seeking to fill multiple temporary full-time Law Clerk positions with the Madison Office.
LEGAL ACTION OF WISCONSIN, INC
Legal Action is a large, vibrant non-profit law firm funded by the federal Legal Services Corporation, the Wisconsin Trust Account Foundation, and other sources. Legal Action provides free legal aid to about 13,500 low-income persons annually in the southern 39 counties of Wisconsin with offices in Milwaukee, Madison, Racine, Oshkosh, Green Bay, and La Crosse. In addition, LAW operates a statewide farmworker project, and several other state-wide projects serving crime victims, including victims of sex and labor trafficking. LAW attorneys have expertise in a range of substantive areas, but the majority of our work is in the areas of housing, public benefits, removing barriers to employment, consumer law, and family law. Legal Action attorneys specialize in specific areas of poverty law, maintain a direct service caseload on behalf of individual clients, and engage in law reform litigation and other impact work.

OFFICE LOCATION
The Madison office is located at 744 Williamson Street, Suite 200, Madison, WI, 53703. The Madison Office staff currently consists of a Managing Attorney, 19 attorneys, 6 paralegals, 1 legal secretary, and 1 Office Manager. Our Madison office serves 9 counties in south central Wisconsin. Some work can be done remotely.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
A Law Clerk will be given assignments that are supervised by attorneys and other full-time staff. Case work generally involves completing intake, interviewing clients, analyzing client's legal
problem(s), drafting correspondence under the supervision of an attorney, and administrative work inherent in case management. Other responsibilities include supporting attorneys through fact investigation, document preparation, legal research and writing, negotiations with adverse parties, and litigation and administrative hearings preparation and support. To a lesser degree, a Law Clerk will support LAW's outreach efforts to reach and educate eligible clients throughout the service area.
EXPOSURE AND TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
A Law Clerk will receive introductory trainings in one or two areas of law, with housing or barriers to employment likely to be one of these areas. A Law Clerk will develop experience conducting interviews with potential clients. Law clerks will work closely with Legal Action attorneys.
QUALIFICATIONS
Current or rising 1L or 2L at an ABA-approved law school.
Demonstrated commitment to social justice, including diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Ability to work as part of a team and demonstrate excellent communication skills.
Demonstrate the ability to be resourceful, analyze problems, and propose problem-solving solutions.
Ability to communicate in languages other than English is encouraged.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position involves sedentary work, including sitting at a desk on a computer for an extended period. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis to lift, carry, push or otherwise move objects. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and/or laptop keyboard and use a telephone. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision requirements due to computer work. Drives a motor vehicle while seated for extended periods of time daily. Occasional reaching, bending, kneeling and stooping involved to retrieve various items and materials. This position works in an environmentally-controlled office environment with moderate noise from phones, printers and light office traffic in the LAW office.
SALARY AND TERMS
The Law Clerk position is a full-time (40 hours per week) temporary position with Legal Action. The Law Clerk position is meant for law students to work with Legal Action for a temporary period. Hourly pay is $15 an hour. For the summer of 2024, we expect Law Clerks to start
working June 3 and finish at the latest on September 1. A Law Clerk will be based in the Madison LAW office. We may consider remote work, depending on the situation.
GOVERNANCE
As with any Legal Action position, there is no guaranteed period of employment and employment is at will, subject to termination at any time.
