Must have current USCG MMC minimum Chief Engineer UFIV, Unlimited HP. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of propulsion engines and auxiliary equipment of a vessel engaged in commercial fishing in the Bering Sea, Alaska and the Pacific Northwest Coast.
Primary Job Functions:
- Works on rotation in the operation, repair and maintenance of main engines, water pumps, air compressors, electric motors, and other electrical equipment.
- Works with rotating Chief Engineer to schedule Engine Room department rotations for adequate coverage for both fishing operations and shipyard maintenance periods.
- Communicate as part of a leadership team on the vessel including the Captain and Factory Manager.
- Engages with the office regarding rotations and staffing needs in a timely manner.
- Maintain and repair largescale refrigeration equipment, high and low pressure hydraulic systems, evaporative and reverse osmosis water makers and onboard sewage treatment systems.
- Maintain and repair other equipment on the deck and in the galley including winches, cranes, and galley mechanical equipment.
- Responsible for decisions relating to the safe operation of equipment, its maintenance and repair.
- Utilizes available resources to prevent breakdowns so the vessel can maintain its production schedule.
- Maintain the ships’ hull and machinery in first class condition meeting all regulatory requirements.
- Stand watch as engineer on duty. Maintain accurate maintenance records and spare part inventory using the ships Amos M&P program.
- Ability to use hand tools, machine tools, and electrical test equipment. Assist Factory Engineering staff with technical/electrical problems that may occur with the factory process equipment.
- Fulfill duties in a safe, efficient, manner and without jeopardy to self or others.
- Be familiar with, and operate in compliance with the regulatory requirements for vessels operating in US waters and/or transiting international waters.
- Participate in all required drills, safety orientations, meetings and follow up instruction as necessary.
- Maintain Shipyard Competency certifications in compliance with Seattle Fire Department requirements. Ensures trained and adequate fire watch coverage for all hot-work operations.
- Lead by example in the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Support all company compliance programs including, though not limited to USDC, USDA, ADEC, Global Food Safety Initiative, and BRC.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
- USCG license equivalent to, or higher thanthe following: ChiefEngineer UFIV, Unlimited HP.
- Knowledge of Diesel engines and propulsion systems, auxiliary systems such as electrical motors, electrical circuits and power distribution systems, hydraulic, water, and sewage systems.
- Ability to assist in planning projects, establish priorities, resolve problems, and to work without supervision in a timely manner.
- At sea this job consists of standing a 12 hour watch from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM. On call 24 hours per day in case of emergency or other abnormal operating conditions.
- Voyages can be up to 60 days at sea with Pollock tripsaveraging 11-14 days and Pacific Whiting/Hake trips averaging 15-20 between port stops for the duration of the season.
- Average work days per year are approximately 180-190including both at sea and in port periods, split on a rotation basis. In port working hours are 12 hour days, seven day weeks.

Employee Responsibility:
- Employees taking medication or requiring eyeglasses or contacts need a backup pair/sufficient supply to last at least 90 days.
- Maintains physical and dental health in preparation for work at sea, far from medical facilities, pharmacies or dental services.
- Employees provide their own rain gear as needed, as well as their own sleeping gear and work boots. Coveralls for Engineers are provided.
