  • Salary Range: $90,990 - $138,760 annually (Determined by function, education, experience, and qualifications of the applicant. A 15% salary uplift is provided on top of base salary for positions that are worked in New York City or San Francisco, which is subject to change depending on market conditions.).

Project Overview:

Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.

 

The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.

 

This position will support the High-Level Waste (HLW) Vitrification efforts from restoration to completion. The HLW is the most complex of all the WTP facilities and will host some of the top professionals in their field to design, engineer, procure and construct HLW vitrification systems.

 

This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30am to 5:00pm. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work weekends as needed.

The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) and Amentum. WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.

 

Position Summary:

Assigned to the Construction organization as a Survey Engineer/Metrology and ScanningParty Chief, responsible for providing field and office support as required to the construction survey team. The Survey Engineer/Metrology and ScanningParty Chief reports directly to the Project Lead Survey Engineer (LSE). The Survey Engineer/Metrology and ScanningParty Chief interprets design drawings and specifications to determine associated commodities and equipment locations and provides direction and supervision to his/her assigned field survey team in support of the civil, structural, mechanical, and piping installations in the work area.

 

Responsibilities:

The Survey Engineer/Metrology and ScanningParty Chief duties include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Provide technical direction to direct-hire survey crews.
  • Provide support to both Field Engineering and Field Supervision.
  • Support the survey team’s implementation of the project safety, quality, and environmental programs.
  • Responsible for the accurate layout of construction work, recordation of field data according to job specifications and appropriate methods of performing survey activities.
  • Perform duties of a Party Chief on a 2 or 3 person direct-hire survey crew.
  • Utilize survey instruments in conjunction with Bechtel survey procedures including Robotic Total Station, GNSS, Laser Scanning and Laser Tracker instruments.
  • Develop and maintain survey data.
  • Perform Calibration Baseline checks of survey instruments.
  • Support the administration of the survey work request program.
  • Perform and/or check survey computations as required in the performance of duties.
  • Provide civil project completion documentation including "As-Built" records.
  • Perform verifications of subcontract survey work.
  • Perform 3D Laser Scanning operations, including reality capture and scan data processing.
  • Perform Metrology measurements and computations.
  • Assist with providing direction and training to less experienced survey team members.

 

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualificatons:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technical degree and 6 years’ experience in heavy construction/industrial surveying, involving a mix of field and office duties with modern instruments and software, with at least 3 years’ supervisorial experience, or in lieu of a degree, 12 years’ experience, with at least 3 years’ supervisorial experience.
  • Multi-Disciplined Field Engineering Survey experience with earthwork, excavation, concrete, structural steel, mechanical, and piping, etc. installation layout and verification.
  • Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience.
  • Must have a solid record of successful project completion with little to zero rework.
  • Knowledge of construction survey principles.
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to industrial surveying field & office activities.
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to Metrology field & office activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to always maintain a safe work ethic and work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment, able to formulate a working relationship with survey team members, other departments, contractors, and survey functional management.
  • Self-starter, highly motivated, requiring little supervision, and able to work well on multiple work fronts, with excellent problem-solving ability.
  • Displays effective communications skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated experience with Robotic Total Stations, Digital Levels & GNSS survey systems.
  • Demonstrated experience using Trimble survey equipment and Access field software.
  • Work under time constraints and must be adaptable to changing conditions.
  • Advanced knowledge of data downloading.
  • Intermediate level use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Teams, and Excel.
  • Demonstrated experience with 3D Laser Scanning hardware and software (Leica Cyclone).
  • Demonstrated experience with Laser Tracker hardware and Metrology software (Spatial Analyzer).
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
  • Must possess the right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior NS&E GBU / DOE project experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with 3D Survey CAD software, including the ability to perform and check digital computations for generation of survey layout data and drafting of as staked/as-built data; generate DTMs and compute volumes.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Network Least Square Adjustment software.
  • Awareness of government compliance standards.
  • Knowledge using GPR equipment (GSSI).
