Library - Rockwood Library Makerspace Program Assistant Internship
Pay Rate: $24/hour
Job Type: Temporary College Intern
Duration:June through September 2024
Approximate schedule: About 15-25 hours/week.
Schedule may be flexible within these parameters:
Tuesday - Friday 12:00 - 6:00
Saturday - 9:00 -5:00
Work location:Rockwood Library Makerspace, 17917 SE Stark, Portland
TriMet Passes are available if transportation to County facilities is required.

Overview:
The Rockwood Library Makerspace is a collaborative learning environment at Rockwood Library with an emphasis on middle and high school learners. We offer access to cool technology (3D printers, laser cutter/engraver, and more), workshops and camps, adult and teen mentors, project ideas, art supplies, and a space for teens to hang out. The makerspace specializes in connecting teens' personal passions and interests to new skills and innovative equipment to make anything possible. We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative assistant to work with staff to provide programs and support for teens in the makerspace.
Internship Description & Responsibilities:
- Assist staff in the Rockwood Library makerspace
- Support public programs for teens, adults and families
- Work on makerspace related projects
- Research creative curriculum and projects
- Support Rockwood staff with makerspace outreach efforts
- Provide culturally appropriate and responsive assistance to the diverse community that is the geographic center of Multnomah County's Rockwood neighborhood.
Learning Outcomes:
- Develop strong problem solving skills through hands-on co-creation with patrons.
- Learn how to create 3D prints, laser cuts, vinyl stickers, and gain proficiency in the library's maker tools.
- Develop leadership and communication skills in working with the public, especially teens.
The Ideal Candidate will:
- Be comfortable and enthusiastic working with teens and adults in the library.
- Be excited about learning and using creative technologies.
- Have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as the ability to collaborate within a team environment.
- Communicate, understand, and follow written and oral instructions; ask questions if unclear.
- Be flexible, cooperative, and able to adapt and thrive in a changing environment.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required:
- Comfortable and excited about trying new creative things.
- Enjoy building positive mentoring relationships with teens attending drop in.
- Enjoy talking with people and providing information and instruction to groups and individuals.
- Enjoy working with technology and crafts.
- Able to troubleshoot technology and problem solve with staff.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with people from different cultures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others.
