Position Description
The Library Equity & Engagement Manager will be a key member of Tacoma Public Library's senior leadership team, working to assess, design, develop, implement, research, and evaluate equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives appropriate to TPL's values, goals, and strategic priorities.
As the Equity & Engagement Manager you will be responsible for:
Equity, diversity, & inclusion. Research the best-suited diversity and inclusion tools and resources for implementation at the organization. Lead the organization in implementing the Library's Equity and Access Strategic Priority, helping to identify specific action step and meet benchmarks and timelines.
Programming, partnerships, and outreach. Through intentional outreach, collaborate with community members and the Leadership Team to ensure that programs, partnerships, and outreach efforts are developed and assessed through an equity lens, and are reflective of the diverse perspectives, cultures, and needs of our community.
Analyze workplace trends. Work with the Library's Human Resources Manager to analyze workplace diversity trends (e.g., recruitment, hiring, retention, professional development, employee engagement) and propose changes in policies, practices, and processes that are equitable. Work within the Library's strategic vision and plan to create workplace metrics, identify necessary changes, and develop internal and external partnerships.
Diverse workforce. Partner with the Library's Human Resources Manager to serve as equity and diversity expert, providing consultative services and guidance. Support and guide hiring managers to ensure diversity and inclusion is embedded in HR processes such as recruitment, hiring, retention, and employee relations, and to provide resources for supporting staff. Help to further develop benchmarks, goals, and measures by which to assess equity and diversity.
Staff learning and culture. Partner with the Learning and Development Specialist and other internal stakeholders to design and deliver learning and development opportunities across the organization; Help build on a foundation of shared knowledge and understanding, helping to foster a culture and mindset that aligns with our strategic priority of Equity and Access; Support specific anti-racist outcomes as defined in a system-wide EDI plan; Identify new opportunities to engage staff in community conversations and activities related to Library EDI priorities; Attend EDI workshops/conferences to stay abreast of new and developing programs, approaches, and advancements; Lead workshops with Leadership and other staff teams on equity, diversity, and inclusion; Work in partnership with HR and public services staff to schedule training and activities, and to generally foster a safe and welcoming environment where all voices and perspectives are heard and honored.
Working relationships. Foster good working relationships with staff across the organization and community. Develop partnerships with equity, diversity, and inclusion experts. Accept and complete assignments in a professional and timely manner.
Customer experience. Collaborate with the Learning and Development Specialist to ensure that library service models are developed and assessed through an equity lens and meets the needs of our communities.
Committees and workgroups. In support of clearly defined EDI goals and objectives, act in a leadership role on the Racial Equity and Social Justice team by providing guidance, coaching, and direction. Serve as the liaison between the Racial Equity and Social Justice team (RESJ) and Senior Leadership Team (SLT). Keep the SLT apprised of projects that RESJ is working on.
Leadership and supervision. Take a leadership role in mentoring and coaching members of the senior leadership team, managers, and staff.
Project management. Directly manage projects related to the accomplishment of EDI and anti-racist related outcomes.
Qualifications
Minimum Education*
Bachelor's degree in human resources, business or public administration, cross-cultural communication or directly related field
Minimum Experience*
4 years of progressively responsible experience coordinating and championing diversity, equity and inclusion programs for an organization.
*Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching, training, and/or delivering learning content to adults related to workplace equity, diversity, and inclusion, or anti-oppressive practices is desirable
  • Experience working with diverse groups, traditionally underrepresented groups
  • A learning/growth mindset and high level of social and emotional intelligence. (self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management.)
  • Experience in community engagement
Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of:
  • Library operations, programs, and services
  • Best practices in supporting Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in organizations
Skills and Abilities:
  • Spanish or other non- English language skills
  • Organizational development
  • Create, design, and deliver learning and development opportunities
  • Develop and implement strategies to help people and organizations navigate complex equity, diversity, and inclusion issues
  • Taking a leadership role when working with Leadership Teams and on a workgroup or task force.
  • Implementing change management processes
  • Leading internal teams or committees as well as managing external relationships and consultants
  • Mentoring other employees or volunteers

Insurance Plans: You may participate in one of several group health insurance programs. Employees and their dependents are covered by a medical-surgical-hospital plan, vision plan, dental plan, and employees are covered by a long-term disability plan. Short-term and expanded long-term disability insurance and Deferred Compensation options are also available.
Employees are covered by the State Industrial Insurance Act.
Paid leave: Library Employees are entitled to receive paid holidays, and Personal Time Off (PTO).
Retirement: All employees of the Library except part-time Pages, temporary employees, and certain project employees, are included in the City of Tacoma Employees' Retirement System. Information on the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System can be found at www.cityoftacorna.org or by calling (253) 502-8200. All members of the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System are also covered by Social Security.
The Tacoma Public Library is not a department of the City of Tacoma and the Library's employees are not employees of the City. The Library is a separate entity with its own governing body. The Library's governing body is the Tacoma Public Library Board of Trustees.
Employees of the City of Tacoma who accept employment with the Tacoma Public Library will lose their City of Tacoma employee seniority. They will also find that their leave accruals, and some of the benefits enjoyed as employees of the City of Tacoma do not carry over when they are hired for a position with the Tacoma Public Library.
