Department: Boyden Library
Supervisor: Senior Youth Services Librarian Salary: $19.17/hr.
- Performs all circulation duties including but not limited to: checking materials in and out, searching for materials, placing patron holds, new patron registration, collecting fines and fees, preparing materials for transit, and other related patron services
- Provides basic reference and readers’ advisory service to patrons; interprets library policies and procedures to the public
- Receives materials and verifies packing information and report materials not received
- Processes all Children’s materials including books, periodicals kits, puppets, and audio-visual materials; prepares new materials for circulation
- Evaluates, mends and repairs all Children’s materials
- Prepares orders for processing and mending supplies for Children’s Department
- Assists with staff and volunteer training
- Performs ongoing story times and assists with other Children’s programs
- Works collaboratively to improve department practices and procedures
- Performs other related duties as required
- High school diploma, minimum
- Public or school library experience preferred
- Knowledge of Children’s material desirable
- Experience with automated library systems and personal computers preferred
- Knowledge of library methods, policies, procedures, and materials
- Strong computer skills are essential, and an ability to troubleshoot basic equipment issues
- Ability to organize time and to work independently, multitasking, and accomplishing tasks.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, patrons, vendors, and other town employees
- Ability to learn automated library systems
- Knowledge of children’s materials, including books, audio-visual materials, online materials and databases; ability to recommend appropriate materials to patrons
- Ability to provide all necessary functions of story time programming
- Ability to handle shifting workloads and schedules, work flexibly, exercise initiative and independent judgment
- Attention to detail required
Employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, speak and hear; uses hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. Able to reach with hands and arms as in picking up paper, files and other common office objects. Employee may be required to stoop, bend and lift or move objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges; requires ability to read documents and use a computer.
Work is performed under typical office conditions; noise level is quiet to moderate; work is subject to seasonal fluctuations and administrative deadlines.
Operates computer, microfilm reader, facsimile machine, copier, scanner, and other standard office equipment. Has contact with town employees and officials, Library Board of Trustees, vendors, and the public. Has access to patron information.
