The Legal Clerk classification series is utilized primarily in the Offices of District Attorney, Minors' Advocacy and County Counsel to provide legal clerical support to attorney staff and investigators. Incumbents prepare and/or process the full spectrum of legal documents and actions. Legal Clerk I is the entry level in the series where incumbents work under close supervision and review of work assignments. Legal Clerk II is the experienced level where work is performed with minimal supervision in a framework of established procedures. Legal Clerk I's are expected to advance to the II level upon satisfactory completion of the minimum requirements for the higher level and, when, upon the recommendation of the Department Head, they have demonstrated the ability to perform at the experienced level.
The Legal Clerk classification series is distinguished from the Office Assistant series by the complexity of the duties, the breadth of legal knowledge involved, the consequences of error, and the coordinative responsibilities with the various courts. It is distinguished from the Department Specialist, Justice System Specialty by the primary responsibility for legal clerical support to attorney staff and the focus on preparation, prosecution and disposition of court cases.
