CLASSROOM TEACHER
QUALIFICATIONS:
AA, Bachelor, or Master’s Degree in Early Childhood education (ECE) or related field of study supervised field experience and one (1) year classroom experience. Willingness to continue training.
GENERAL FUNCTION: Under the supervision of the Education Coordinator, is responsible for providing a stimulating environment for the growth, well being and development of the child.
SPECIFIC FUNCTION (example of duties):
The Classroom Teacher will:
- Supervise and provide educational and developmental services to children 3 to 5 years old in a Head Start Classroom Setting
- Select developmentally appropriate materials and equipment to arrange the classroom that will provide an environment conducive to learning the style of children.
- Provide a safe environment by taking necessary measures to reduce and prevent accidents and/or illness as well as completing the daily classroom checklist.
- Provide the group with a positive routine with simple rules that are understood and accepted by children and adults.
- Provide a variety of appropriate activities with opportunities to promote the physical development of the children.
- Provide activities and experiences which encourage questioning, probing and problem-solving skills developmentally appropriate to learning the style of children.
- Help children to acquire and use language as a means of communicating their thoughts, feelings and understanding of others.
- Provide a variety of experiences and media that stimulates children to explore and express their creative ability.
- Help children to know, accept and appreciate themselves as individuals.
- Help each child develop a sense of independence and acquire the ability to express, understand and control their feelings.
- Help children to learn to get along and encourage feelings of mutual respect amongst their peers and others.
- Establish positive and productive relationships with parents and encourage them to participate in Center’s activities.
- Plan and conduct parent conferences and make home visits with the Family Services Coordinator.
- Work cooperatively with other staff members in the implementation of center plans, activities, policies and rules.
- Model for, evaluate, and assist with the training and development of the Assistant Teacher
- Organize and serve as primary resource person for the Class Committee.
- Be responsible for the initial ongoing observation, assessment and recording of each child’s behavior.
- Develop written individualized education plans for children.
- Develop the written weekly lesson plans for the classroom.
- Organize and chair team planning sessions when scheduled .
- Serve as a member of comprehensive developmental team CDT when appropriate.
- Make appropriate referrals based upon children's screening and assessment results, team planning sessions, and or CDT staff meetings.
- Be responsible for all necessary record keeping, (e.g. meal count, attendance, documentation of individualizing for each child, Early Learning Assessment observations, anecdotal notes)
- Initiate center plan of action for absence of children.
- Follow written policies and regulations established by the Center, Health Department and granting agency.
- Participate in workshops, seminars and assigned training programs that will facilitate ongoing professional development.
- Make regular inspections and report the need for repair/replacement of classroom supplies and equipment.
- Requisition classroom supplies and equipment.
- Other duties as assigned

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $23.37 - $33.36 per hour
