Under general supervision, the Lead Laboratory Technician is responsible for independently collecting, accessioning, processing, performing and reporting moderately complex and waived testing according to physician orders and in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures, FDA, TJS, CLIA, and OSHA regulations to facilitate optimum quality patient care. The Lead Laboratory Technician is a resource to other laboratory personnel, physicians, and nursing staff in the absence of the MLS lead and/or supervisor. Additionally, the Lead Laboratory Technician aids ancillary employees to troubleshoot patient care issues regarding all laboratory processes. Handles day to day processing and patient problems with little supervision, provides training and mentoring and is the liaison for the department when the MLS Lead and/or supervisor is not available.
Essential Functions:
- Performs accessioning, processing preservation and tracking steps for all specimens obtained in the laboratory. This includes using appropriate instructions and procedures located in the laboratory information system. (20%)
- Processes specimens accurately during all steps of specimen processing and resulting. (20%)
- Is responsible for the processing, handling, tracking and resulting of specimens sent to outside reference labs. This may include communicating with Pathologists, clinical staff and insurance representatives. (15%)
- Provides laboratory assistance with bone marrow procedures in both the outpatient and inpatient areas of the hospital. (10%)
- Orders laboratory supplies from Central Supply in order to perform all procedures and testing available. (10%)
- Assists in training and teaching of new staff, students, or residents in the laboratory as needed. This includes acting as a mentor and resource to coworkers. (10%)
- Assists with the maintenance of the Laboratory Technician schedule to ensure adequate coverage. Assists supervisor and MLS lead with scheduling changes, such as shift trades. (10%)
- Assists supervisor with staff huddles, projects and coordination of the workflow between the laboratory and outside departments, which may include attending outside department meetings as a representative of the laboratory. (10%)
- Assist in compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies. (10%)
- Assist supervisor in developing departmental cohesion and collegiality using praise and appreciation of staff. This includes consulting with the supervisor about any unresolved issues or complaints and problem solving as needed. (10%)
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED Required
Work Experience:
- 1-3 years experience as a Laboratory Technician in a hospital/medical laboratory (Required)
Licenses:
- Ability to work professionally with patients and coworkers.
- Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to perpetuate teamwork.
- Ability to communicate with others effectively to ensure patient safety and quality processes.
- Ability to maintain an organized, detail-oriented mindset while identifying, accessioning, and handling specimens for processing and testing
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance in quality control and competency requirements.
- Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve independently of supervisor.
