About the role:
KACE is seeking an experienced Law Clerk/Attorney I in support of one of our clients to perform complex legal research and writing on sophisticated legal issues and assist with all phases of 28 USC §2255 (habeas corpus) matters. The ideal candidate must be extremely well-organized and detail oriented, have excellent research and writing skills and is able to work in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Oversees practice with regard to 28 USC §2255 (habeas corpus) matters including but not limited to receiving and docketing, calendaring due dates, locating files to draft responses, submitting draft responses for review
- Analyze financial records obtained by investigating agencies through internal and external databases and submit reports documenting results when requested
- Attending to timely filing of responses
- Analyze statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations and law review articles as they relate to assigned cases, including those of an especially complex or unprecedented nature
- Brief attorney on pertinent facts, issues and case law
- Draft correspondence and legal documents for attorney, judge and magistrate signatures
- Determine applicable administrative statutory and regulatory law and identify violations or causes of action
- Develop an understanding of all applicable, federal, state or local laws and keeps abreast of any new criminal rules and procedures
- Alert the client to all potential issues while conducting review and data analysis within case file
- Provide legal support as described to the client; the Law Clerk/Attorney I will not be allowed to appear in court to represent the United States
Minimum Qualifications & Skills:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Successfully pass a background investigation
- A favorable credit check
- Law Degree (Juris Doctor)
- State bar license
- Demonstrated ability to utilize law library resources and working knowledge of research tools (Westlaw, LexisNexis, CourtLink)
- Demonstrated legal writing and communication skills
- Resume - 2 pages maximum
- A writing sample - 3 pages maximum
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and a dependable vehicle
- Availability to travel when necessary
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of federal, state and local laws
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to review a variety of documents ranging from legal and non-legal to include motions, briefs, and legal correspondence
- Ability to consistently deliver the highest quality of work under extreme pressure
