The Housing Advice Line Attorney is responsible for the efficient delivery of high-quality legal advice, brief service, and referrals to eligible low-income callers with landlord tenant problems. The Attorney will distinguish between clients that need legal advice or brief service, such as a letter or call to a third party, and those that need more extensive representation. If the tenant's problem warrants direct representation, the Attorney will refer the case to one of GLSP's regional offices. The Advice Line Attorneys handled cases throughout GLSP 154 county service area. As such, they have a unique statewide perspective that creates the opportunity for them to identify and address systemic issues effecting tenants.
The Advice Line is a specialized unit within GLSP providing services throughout GLSP's 154 county service area under the supervision of GLSP's Housing Unit Director. The types of legal problems addressed by the Advice Line changes frequently in response to the needs of tenants and its funders. The Housing Advice Line is a virtual work group, separate and independent from GLSP's regional offices. The Advice Line attorney may be located anywhere in Georgia as this position is fully remote.
The Advice Line Attorney must be able to adapt quickly to changes in the types of cases they handle. For example, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an eviction moratorium, the Advice Line shifted its work priorities to assisting tenants seeking protection under the moratorium. When Georgia implemented a rental assistance program, the Advice Line shifted it work to prioritize preventing evictions while tenants applied for rental assistance. The Advice Line currently handles only private landlord tenant cases. However, as funding and staffing permit, it is anticipated its services will expand to tenants of subsidized landlords.
Primary Duties:
- Effectively and efficiently provide legal advice, brief service, and referrals to clients.
- Identify systemic issues raised in the Advice Line cases.
- Maintain electronic client case files, enter, and scan information into the client's electronic file including documentation of information provided client.
- Responsible for assessing and reporting on the impact of services given clients.
- Identifying need for and developing written materials for clients.
- Assemble and mail appropriate correspondence and literature to clients as needed.
- Attend virtual weekly staff meeting for Advice Line attorneys within the unit.
- Attend specialized training for Advice Line attorneys within the unit.
Requirements:
- Graduate of an accredited law school and current member of Georgia Bar with experience working with persons with low incomes and a commitment to social justice.
- Working knowledge of Georgia landlord tenant law and experience representing tenants in Georgia courts would be helpful but is not required.
- Ability to effectively speak, understand, and courteously converse with individuals seeking assistance over the phone including ability to use an interpreter as needed.
- Willingness and ability to work as part of a team in a professional and collaborative manner.
- Computer literacy, which includes familiarity using email, Excel, Word, SharePoint, LegalServer, and other computer programs.
- Must have reliable transportation and a valid Georgia driver's license.
- Ability to speak Spanish is highly valued.
