What Success Looks Like In This Job:This position will perform professional legal work for the County Attorney, including representation of the County in hearings and trials, and advising the Board of County Commissioners, elected officials, and directors. Assigned legal responsibilities vary by position and may include direct representation of elected offices or other areas of focus, including particular subject matters or areas of expertise (employment law, elections, Land Use, tax law, contracts, etc.). This position will focus on Land Use, including review of Land Use cases, development agreements, changes to codes and regulations, and enforcement of Land Use requirements.
The County Attorney's Office has elected to hire based upon an individuals qualifications.
Examples of Duties for Success:
Important and essential duties vary based on particular assignment.
- Provide legal support to staff responsible for planning and Land Use, including day to day legal advice on issues that arise.
- Advise County staff and the Board of County Commissioners regarding legal issues arising in the context of Land Use and code development.
- Provide legal support to the Board of County Commissioners, Planning Commission, and Board of Adjustment during study sessions and Land Use hearings.
- Research legal questions and prepare opinions.
- Draft ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents.
- Monitor legal developments, including proposed legislation and court decisions and participate in legislative committees as needed.
- Review development agreements and other contracts
- Provide guidance and training to clients on compliance and preventive measures.
- Provide representation to other County departments and offices as needed.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.

- Ability to perform statutory interpretation and legal research analysis and writing.

- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Proficiency in current computer software programs used for daily job functions, including knowledge of Lexis-Nexis and/or Westlaw legal software.
- Ability to interpret and apply legal principles to complex legal problems.
More Qualifications for Success:
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a licensed attorney in field related to assignment required for Career level position.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience required for Senior level position.
Education and Training:
Must possess a law degree from an accredited law school.
License or Certificate:
- Must be licensed to practice law with the State of Colorado.
